Around the Corner Tamara Thomsen

October 8th – November 10th

Reception October 18

7-9pm.

"Around the Corner" is a series of paintings on wood panels inspired by the industrial landscape on the East River waterfront in Long Island City, where artist Tamara Thomsen lived for several years. Muted colors and flattened perspective capture the look and feel of a neighborhood growing beyond its early twentieth-century roots.

Thomsen, who now lives in Bedford Stuyvesant in Brooklyn and maintains a studio in Gowanus, uses various techniques and materials, as well as experience gained in a two-decade stint in the design world, to investigate the premises of an overly embellished environment.

From 1981 to 1998, she was a co-founder and Senior Vice President at Smart Design, an award-winning, multi-disciplinary design firm with offices in New York and San Francisco, best known for developing Oxo Good Grips kitchen tools.

Thomsen earned an M.F.A. in Painting at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1981, and a B.F.A. in Painting Syracuse University in 1976. All work in the exhibition is milk paint, wood stains and veneer on wood panels. For more information, see http://tamarathomsen.com

A member of the Gowanus Artists Association, Thomsen will also show her work in her studio during the A.G.A.S.T. 2007 Gowanus Artists Association Open Studio, October 21 and 21st. For more information about hours and location: http://gowanusartists.com Music

8 p.m.

J. Phoenix is a winner of the ASCAP/Sammy Cahn Award for excellence in lyrics ad has performed in clubs all over New York, including the CBGB Gallery and Arlene’s Grocery, as well as the Sundance Film Festival and Intel Music Festival.

Music journalist Brian Cogan says: “J. Phoenix is by no means a soul singer in the traditional sense. While trace elements of Al Green and Sam Cooke can be detected on the Geiger counter, there is just as much craft as a typical Disney show tune, somehow funneled through Seal.”

J. Phoenix’s songs have been recorded by Nancy Wilson, Tupac Shakur, Michelle Wright, and Earth Wind and Fire. This fall he releases his debut CD, Masterpiece (From The Soul Music).

Friday, 10/12/07 Nhojj

8 p.m.

Nhojj started singing as a child in Guyana, where he performed in churches, on radio programs and eventually for the president. At 18, he moved to New York City, where after graduating from NYU with a B.A. in Economics, returned to his true calling - music. He has recorded two CDs, “I've Been Waiting for You” (2001) and “Someday Peace Love & Freedom” (2003).

”If Wyclef is the new face of social conscience and Arrested Development its history, then Caribbean-born, NY-raised Nhojj is its voice. What a voice. It manifests itself through his throat as a honeyed, subdued and unadorned combination of Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. It manifests itself in an imagination that has created a hybrid of soft Southern soul, folk and jazz-reggae. His is a voice that is as familiar as an old friend, as comforting as a happy memory, as stirring as the first flush of love. LOGO-Magazine / UK's #1 New Music Magazine

Ellie Balk

September 5th – October 7th, 2007 Between the Extremes

Ellie Balk lives in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, and travels frequently to the Pacific Northwest. She oversees mural projects and other examples of “collaborative art” in both locations, with a keen eye towards local landscapes, both physical and social.

The paintings in this exhibition function as documents of process, created through layers of paint and imagery. The works are expressions of both tension and beauty, and the balance of the space that lives between the extremes. Color, line, expression, documentation, and fantasy all find common ground and harmony on found objects and canvases.

Balk has an M.F.A. from Pratt Institute in Painting and Art History and a B.A. in Art History from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. She also studied painting in Florence, Italy. She has exhibited her work widely in New York, Portland, Oregon, and in the Midwest. She has been a Teaching Artist at the 92nd St. Y Art Center in Manhattan, as well as the Rotunda Gallery in Brooklyn, and has executed numerous mural projects in the New York City public schools and at street fairs and block parties.

This exhibit will be on display at the Alumni Room Gallery, Tuohy Hall, 245 Clinton Avenue, Brooklyn, N.Y., from September 5th to October 11. There will be a gallery talk on Wednesday, September 19th at 12:40 p.m.

In addition, there will be receptions on Thursday, September 13th from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and also on Saturday, September 15th from 12:00 p.m. to 3 p.m. All are free and open to the general public. Regular gallery hours are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 12 to 3 p.m.

Following the wildly popular LACMA Masters of Comics exhibition, Lost Treasure seeks to fill in the historical gaps of the record of this uniquely American artform. Culled from the personal collection of Dan Nadel, a professor of illustration at the Parsons School of Design, this exhibition is a unique opportunity to view some of the truly lost treasures of American art. Dating from the early 20th century to today, Nadel's collection includes traditional Sunday newspaper comic strip art as well as avant-garde comics produced by underground cartoonists from the 1960's to present day.

CH History at Clinton Hill Art Gallery

Yesterday, Clinton Hill Art Gallery sponsored a talk with Margaret and Joan Vincent, two sisters who have spent their entire lives living in Clinton Hill. I found out about it only minutes before it started -- the Brooklyn Paper sent me over to take some photos -- so I was able to run over and sit in for part of the talk. (They'll have a full article about the event in the next issue.)The sisters, who have lived in the nabe since the 1930s, talked about all the fun they had here as children. They frequented a movie theater on Myrtle Ave, which once stood near Connecticut Muffin, and ice skated in Fort Greene Park, on a rink that stood where the tennis courts are now. In the 1940s, they lamented the loss of the mansions and yards razed to build what would become the Clinton Hill Co-ops between Myrtle and Willoughby, as they used to sled and play there.

And guess what Clinton Hill had a lot of back then? Bakeries. Go figure.

Clinton Hill Art Gallery does a series of August parlor chats every year, and it looks like the Vincent Sisters may have been the last one. The gallery's owner, L.B. Brown, has been a true pioneer, opening an art and framing shop on Myrtle in 1991, and the gallery in 2004.

Live Jazz: Who Knew?

Turns out there's live jazz in our 'hood regularly! I've been meaning to check out Parlour Jazz on Vanderbilt since moving to the neighborhood, but never have. Apparently, the jazz club is housed in a brick townhouse between Myrtle and Park. Parlor Jazz 718-855-1981 www.parlorjazz.com

The website takes me back to 1996, but I'm definitely going to make checking this out a priority

I've also seen web mention of something called Jazz 966, which seems to happen at 966 Fulton. This also may or may not be an old folks home? Jazz 966 718-638-6910

Finally, it appears that this renovated space, called LOX, next to Kush on Fulton is slated to be a new jazz club!

If it opens while I'm away, I expect a FULL report.

Events at Urban Glass

Hi, all: Still in Krakow, and have received a few interesting event emails as of late.  Hopefully I will have time to elaborate more when I return, but for now, here's the info in case you want to check it out:

Friday, July 20 at UrbanGlass

7 – 9 pm Andrew Newbold Object and Atmosphere Opening reception

Free, open to the public

9 pm – midnight Rock the Hot Shop $15 admission, 21 + over

Friday, July 20, Philadelphia-based artist Andrew Newbold's solo exhibition opens in the Robert Lehman Gallery at UrbanGlass. The glass and metal sculpture and site-specific installation reflect the artist's interpretation of his own experience with industry, specifically glass production, and embrace the manufactured landscape of such industrial spaces. Newbold describes the glass factory as a place filled with interesting systems, varieties of containers, vessels, and objects with individual personality, character, and function. As a fabricator of functional metal forms and as an artist, Newbold observes a symbiotic relationship between the workplace and studio environments.

For works such as The Stack, Newbold assembles simple forms with primary building processes in repetition, thereby imbuing the objects with new life and identity. In Glass Containers, bent glass and formed metal cones are combined to create a composition that evokes a precarious balancing act. By integrating sculptural objects with their surroundings, the artist dissolves the separation between the gallery and the object, creating atmosphere and experience.

A graduate of the Columbus College of Art and Design, Andrew Newbold received his MFA from the Tyler School of Art, Temple University in 2005.  Awarded the Creative Glass Center of America Fellowship in 2006 and a 1998 Glass Art Society Conference scholarship, he has exhibited widely throughout the eastern United States . Newbold's work was included in UrbanGlass' juried 2005 MFA Exhibition. As the winner of that group show competition, he earned the opportunity to mount this solo exhibition at UrbanGlass. Newbold is currently an adjunct assistant professor at the Tyler School of Art and continues to work in metal fabrication.

Following the opening reception for Object and Atmosphere , UrbanGlass hosts a Rock the Hot Shop event from 9:00 pm to midnight. Mighty Redeemer Sound spins records throughout the evening. $15 admission also includes Blue Point Brewing Company beer and white wine sangria all night and a blown glass cup for the first 100 to arrive. First Fridays at RePop: July 6

picture-1.png FIRST FRIDAY JULY 6: FIGURATIVE ABSTRACT by Fred J. Henzel

On July 6, you are cordially invited to celebrate the New York debut of the fine and absract artist, Fred J. Henzel

Henzel is an amazing up and coming talent who is a true master composing mixed media attractions in a fluently raw style. Credited for linking Frued to Kandinsky, his stunning figurative works juxtaposed with depictions of a bright yet crumbling society are both haunting and ethereal with an intention to evoke the senses.

Henzel lives and breathes his work, combining the city streets for discarded relics and reinstating their lost grandeur into "a hopeful apocalypse."

Artist Reception is from 7:30 - 11, so come on down to the Navy Yard, grab a glass of wine, mingle with the art and get your vintage groove on.

10% of all proceeds this First Friday will be donated to the Motor City Youth Theatre of Detroit, MI. MYCT is a non-profit community group who have initiated a higher cultural awareness among Midwestern youngsters and teens since 1980. For more information log on to: http://mcyt.org/

Otherworldly Variations

Paintings and Wall Sculptures by Lawrence Heintjes

The Director of L & M Studio, a local design workshop, Larry Heintjes and his artist wife, Mary Rieser, produced the stained glass sign in Tillie’s window when the store first opened ten years ago. A skilled carpenter, master mold and cabinetmaker and art restorer/fabricator, Larry coordinates all aspects of design, construction and installation for museums, architects, contractors and galleries.

Whether he’s working in plastic, wood, oil paints, or gouache, Larry’s private artistic landscape accommodates eclectic nuances achieving fantastic metaphors and shades of meaning. Inspired by biomorphic forms in many manifestations, his work is a jumping-off point for a curious mind and a frequently surrealistic imagination. The pieces are rich in detail yet mysterious enough to confound and to instigate further inquiry.

Heintjes was educated at Pratt Institute and still lives in Fort Greene with his wife and two daughters. His art installation clients include the Holly Solomon Gallery, Chase Manhattan, and the Whitney Museum. He has exhibited widely in New York at galleries such as BACA Downtown in Brooklyn and the 80 Washington Square East Gallery in Greenwich Village.

He has also lectured on mold making for artists, paper casting, and related subjects at Pratt Institute, the Brooklyn Museum, and Connecticut College in New London. Check out their website at www.LMStudio265.com.

Clinton Hill: Personal Profile

chb-pedicure-profile-banner.jpgName: Ellie Balk Clinton Hill Resident For: 4 years

On June 19, I met up with Clinton Hill resident Ellie Balk at the Polish Bar of Brooklyn for Coco Kiwi Pedicures and a bottle of il Mimo, donated generously by the Greene Grape.

dscf1066.jpg

Drawn to Brooklyn for graduate programs at Pratt four years ago, artist Ellie Balk has made a home in Clinton Hill. Balk still lives in the St. James Place studio apartment she found on her first day of apartment hunting, and has just signed on for another two years.

Balk is both an accomplished painter and art teacher, and has long been a proponent of collaborative creations. When she teaches, Balk encourages students to put marks down on paper and then react to them, encouraging people to open up, moving physically and emotionally.

dscf1076.jpg

Much of Balk’s energy is spent on designing murals for public schools and local communities. Often times, she will encourage participants to begin painting whatever they’d like. Throughout the process, Balk controls only the available paint colors the participants are using, giving them access to colors of similar tones and families for different periods of time to help create continuity. Later, Balk and a few other artists add finishing touches, tying the community’s creations together into one unified final product.

dscf1089.jpg While most of Balk’s community murals are painted on walls, she must occasionally improvise. During last summer’s St. James Place Association block party, Balk was forced to conduct mural painting on paper at St. James and Gates, after the owner of the corner’s scaffolding decided not to allow painting directly on the wood. Neighbors took part enthusiastically regardless, even bringing their own paper from home to add on to the growing design. Mural painting lasted for twelve hours that day, attracting the attention and participation of countless neighbors and passers by. Balk not only coordinated the mural’s painting, but also procured all of her supplies ahead of time by soliciting donations. Sisters Hardware on Fulton came through in a big way, as did local residents.

mural1.jpg

Many of Balk’s community murals are created in the shape of a circle, symbolizing the idea of getting back what one puts in to their surroundings. “You need to know your community to be a part of it,” Balk explains. The circle seems to represent Balk’s personal ideals, and she sports several tattoos of the motif. Currently, she is working with Tillie’s on planning a circular community mural on the building’s side, at Vanderbilt and DeKalb. Both the owner of Tillie’s and the building owners’ are on-board, but Balk is waiting for final approval from Landmarks. Unlike her block party mural, Balk will paint most of the mural herself before the public contributes. She plans on painting a large map of Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, and then allowing members of the community to paint a small mark over where they live, a technique she uses often in school murals. “When people look at the map, they see how close we really live to one another,” Balk says. “Tillie’s is the perfect location for painting the map, at the crossroads of these two neighborhoods.”

mural2.jpg

To sit with Balk is to understand what makes urban living so appealing. Like so many people, she really “gets” what our neighborhood is about, and is able to articulate it through both words and actions. The circle motif makes perfect sense for Clinton Hill, with a diverse population of individuals like Balk stepping up to integrate their interests into the community.

dscf1078.jpg

Balk can be found frequenting local haunts often, citing “The Red Door (her name for Grand 275)” as her favorite hangout. “Luz has the best brunch for sure, and Olea is the best date place – so chill!” She mentions Zaytoons and Castros as well, before exclaiming, “I love my Fulton!” I look at her skeptically, but she’s not joking. “Kush is great, and Joloff? It’s my cure. They cook everything to order and their hot ginger drink is an instant pick-me-up when you’re feeling sick.” Later, Balk gives props to the Pratt Coffee shop for “sincerely taking care of her hunger needs for the past four years.”

On local restaurants and shops in general, she says, “You can just feel something precious [inside]. Someone loves this space and is sharing it with me. The genuine feeling is the whole theme of the neighborhood.”

Balk loves the diversity of Clinton Hill, especially on her street, and explores often. “I go for a two-hour walk, and it’s never the same!” she exclaims. If Balk were a flavor of ice cream, it would be "Cinnamon," she says, "'Cause I'm sweet and a little spicy!"

dscf1091.jpg Ellie Balk recently presented her paintings at RePop’s First Fridays, and will be featured at Tillie’s this fall. Click here to view more of her work.
