Transportation Alternatives Bike Ride This Wknd

Whoops- one more post!  Just received this email, and TA is a really great organization! My name is Oksana and I am a members of the Transportation Alternatives Brooklyn Committee. We have a ride this Saturday that starts close to Clinton Hill (in Fort Greene Park).  If it’s not against your blog’s protocol, would you be able to put a word out on the Clinton Hill Blog about the Transportation Alternatives Brooklyn Committee bike ride?

Transportation Alternatives Brooklyn Committee Parks Ride When: Sunday, 8/17; 10.30am Where: Fort Greene Park, at Dekalb Ave and Cumberland Street

The Brooklyn Committee is hosting its first ride in a series of Brooklyn exploratory rides. We will start out in Fort Greene Park, and ride through some of Brooklyn's historic green spaces. We will make a quick lunch stop and end up at the Yard in Gowanus for after ride drinks. Come out to meet other committee members and find out what we do.

Thank you!

More General Greene Info

On an ambitions jog last night, I noticed that the door to The General Greene was open. Inside, a lone woman worked on a laptop. Of course, I walked right in. Turns out she's the manager, and she had good news! The space will be open tomorrow night after 9pm, as well as over the weekend, for drinks and bar snacks. The official opening will be TUESDAY, JULY 1.

A reader who checked it out last weekend described the beer selection as being "great (small but delicious)," and said the eggplant spread was "pretty tasty."

The General Greene!

library-9008.jpg Several of you emailed me over the weekend about the former June space, which has suddenly turned into a new restaurant: The General Greene!

library-9007.jpg

I have to say, this place seems like it has the potential to be pretty cool.  First, the name: a play on a general store / outpost AND a shout-out to General Nathanael Greene for whom the neighborhood and park are named.

Inside, it looks bright and airy:

library-9010.jpg

Apparently it was open this past weekend for a sneak peek.  Anyone go??? It wasn't open Monday or Tuesday.  (Believe me, I have been walking by incessantly.)

New Art Gallery!

When I posted about the SONYA stroll recently, I included a photo of a small sculpture that I purchased there four years ago. Word about the post made it back to the artist, Kathy Stecko, who was delighted! She reached out to tell me about a new art gallery in the area called I.O.I. (Items of Importance), located on Fort Greene Place and open since November. Stecko, who participated in the gallery's first show, will also be showing there again in September! More info on I.O.I. shows is listed here.

Fort Greene PUPS Spring/Summer Coffee + Membership Drive

From Fort Greene PUPS: On Saturday, June 7, PUPS will hold its annual Spring/Summer Coffee and Membership Drive in Fort Greene Park during off leash hours (between 8AM-9AM). We'll have Gorilla coffee and pastries to help you wake up and get your weekend started. We need two volunteers to help sign up new members! With so many people and dogs moving into the area it's very important that we reach out to newcomers and keep our membership current.

Fort Greene PUPS and bringing your dog to the park for off leash hours are great ways to meet people in the neighborhood!! Plus, membership is FREE! Definitely stop by with your pup this coming weekend.

Community Mural Painting at Tillie's

Last year, I interviewed local artist Ellie Balk as part of the "Personal Profiles" series (which will hopefully be resurrected soon -- if you have any ideas on what you might like, please email me!). She mentioned how she hoped to work with Tillie's to create a community mural -- a map of the neighborhood on which all local residents would be invited to paint a dot on the location where they lived, illustrating how close we all really live to one another and how much the neighborhoods nearby are connected. After many long months of working with Landmarks and raising money and applying for grants, Ellie is ready to begin! tillies-mural-for-sonya-web.JPG

Save the date, as the main citizen participation day will be Saturday, June 21.

Here's the info from the press release:

Tillie’s of Brooklyn is proud to announce the painting of a community mural on the Vanderbilt Avenue side of the store, now an empty brick wall at the corner of Vanderbilt and DeKalb Avenues in the Fort Greene section of the borough. Partnered with the newly created SONYA Mural Arts Project, artist Ellie Balk will paint a 9’ circle map of the neighborhood on the wall starting Friday evening, 6/13. Over the course of a week Balk and a crew of volunteer artists from the area will paint the map on the wall. On Saturday, June 21st from 12:00 p.m. to 6 p.m. the public is invited to participate by putting a dot in the spot where their home is located. Tillie’s will serve refreshments on 6/21 at the dedication ceremony.

South Of the Navy Yard Artists (SONYA) has partnered with Ellie Balk to create the SONYA Mural Arts Fund, which will be used to create and implement murals and public art projects that support the youth and neighborhoods of Brooklyn. The initial goal is to raise $5,000 towards the completion of its first project and the development of future murals. The public is invited to make tax-deductible donations by visiting SONYA's website: http://www.sonyaonline.org/ and clicking on "donate", then noting "Mural Arts Fund" under the special instructions, so that the funds can be allocated properly.

Artist Ellie Balk, a neighborhood resident and artist who specializes in community-based projects, explains: “The goal for the Tillie's Community Mural is to unify and bridge the varying aspects of the local community, giving all people a sense of connectedness. The mural will go up at the point where our neighborhoods meet, at the corner of Vanderbilt and DeKalb: Tillie's has become a home base for many Ft. Greene/Clinton Hill residents.”

With fiscal sponsorship and support from SONYA, this mural has been funded through a grant from the Puffin Foundation and with generous support from the Society for Clinton Hill. It is also supported by: the Landmarks commission of NYC; the Community Board of Kings County; building owner Danny Browne; Tillie's owners, Patricia Mulcahy and Amos Yogev; and many enthusiastic community members. Says SONYA’s president, Kathleen Hayek, “We are excited about the Tillie’s Community Mural and would very much like it to succeed and be the catalyst for many more mural projects within our community.”

To learn more about Ellie Balk’s projects and background as a mural artist, see www.elliebalk.com. For all other inquiries contact Patricia Mulcahy at 718 783-6140 or at mail@tilliesofbrooklyn.com.

The Real World Will Be Close

TMZ is reporting that the Real World folks have signed a lease for the Brooklyn season of the show at the BellTel Lofts in downtown Brooklyn.  The exact address is 365 Bridge Street, which means it's kind of in the middle of nothing.  The problem with that is, it means the kids will be smack dab in the middle of the area where DUMBO, BK Heights, Boerum and yes, FORT GREENE come together. I admit that I've been sucked in to the latest season airing now.  But I'd like to keep my distance from the "cast" via a shiny TV screen, thank you very much.

TONIGHT: Film in Fort Greene Park

Rooftop Films is an organization dedicated to showing independent films in unique outdoor locations throughout NYC. While their summer season officially kicks off June 6, tonight's warm-up film will be shown in Ft. Greene Park at 9pm: This Saturday, May 31st, at 9:00pm we will be holding a free screening of the film "At the Death House Door" in Fort Greene Park, Brooklyn.

The film: Pastor Carroll Pickett oversaw 95 executions at a Texas prison, but the experiences changed his views forever. The makers of "Hoop Dreams" examine this contentious issue through the story of this unique anti-death penalty activist. The filmmakers (Steve James & Peter Gilbert) will also be in attendance for a Q&A after the screening.

The film was reviewed in this week's TimeOut Magazine and sounds really interesting. Sorry for the late notice!

NOTE: Raindate is June 6 at 9pm. These thunderstorms are supposed to continue all day, even though the sun is out now.

Wildflower Seed Giveaway at Ft Greene Artisan's Market

The Artisan's Market often sets up adjacent to the Ft. Greene Farmer's Market on Saturdays from 9am-5pm. This coming Saturday. they'll be giving away free wildflower seeds! More info from Natasha Harsh, market organizer:

Wildflower Seed Give-Away on Saturday, May 31 at Ft.Greene Park's Artisan Market Bees are responsible for pollinating 30% of our food crops. If they become extinct- much of the world's food supply will disappear with them. Haagen-Dazs is supplying 2,000 packets of wildflower seeds for plants favored by foraging honey bees. Fort Greene resident and beekeeper,John Howe of Brooklyn Bee Apiary,is coordinating this effort and will be on hand to offer advice and answer any questions you may have about bees and their role as part of our ecosystem. Artisan Market is located on the DeKalb Avenue sidewalk perimeter of Fort Greene Park starting at the intersection of DeKalb Avenue and Washington Park. Saturdays 9AM-5PM John Howe contact info: 718-858-6891 or jah1943@gmail.com

Are there any bees making honey in the neighborhood? When I lived in Hell's Kitchen several years ago, the Clinton Community Garden harvested honey from their hives and sold it as a fundraiser at garden events. Might be a good idea for Hollenback!

Colors of Nature

Watercolors by Nadia Merzliakow

June 8th – July 6th 2008

Nadia Merzliakow was born in Paris, France, to Russian émigré parents and lived in Germany for seven years before emigrating to the U.S., where she graduated from Hunter College and then studied at Harvard, Columbia, and New York University. She received a Master of Library and Information Science degree from Pratt Institute, where she was Director of International Students for many years. She is fluent in Russian, French, German, and English.

Currently retired, this longtime resident of Clinton Hill volunteers at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, where she takes classes in watercolor painting. She has exhibited her work there and at the Tinicum Arts Festival in Pennsylvania.

Of this new chapter in her life, she writes: “When I was a child, I liked to paint flowers, and anyone who saw them oohed and aahed – with the exception of my parents. Of Russian nobility, my parents lost everything in the Russian Revolution of 1917 and wanted me to have a stable profession. Moreover, my mother’s sister, a very talented artist, was an eccentric. With horror in their voices, they would look at my work and say, ‘Oh, just like Aunt Olga.’ Though I was always interested in art growing up, and attended museums, I did not paint.

I was at Pratt for over 30 years and never took an art class. My work with the international students was demanding and intense. When I retired ten years ago, I became a volunteer at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and took the free watercolor classes there. Remembering my childhood passion for painting flowers, I looked at the offerings and said, why not? Watercolor has changed my vision of the world, particularly that of flowers. When I look now at flowers, my mind absorbs their colors and shapes through an artistic process.”

S.O.N.Y.A. Stroll THIS WEEKEND!

The SONYA (South of the Navy Yard Artists) Stroll is by far one of my favorite events in the neighborhood. It's held annually every May, and is a free, self-guided tour of several art studios and exhibits by artists in Fort Greene, Clinton Hill and Bed-Stuy. The range of art is pretty astounding, from sculpture to paintings to photography to jewelry. shelf with art

(I bought both the sculpture and the chihuahua painting at past SONYA Strolls.)

One of my favorite aspects is finding out that buildings you never before noticed are home to a large artist collective. Be sure to check out 35 Claver Place, an affordable live-work space for artists, and 122 Washington Ave near Park, which is interesting both inside and out and is always filled with cool treasures.

During the stroll, check out the photography exhibit put on by the Fort Greene Photography Organization, which will be up until May 31:

This is one of the coolest ways to explore the neighborhood and is not to be missed!

The Flea: Diversifying!

I swung by the BK Flea two Sundays ago. It was my first trip back since opening day and I'm happy to say that stuff seemed nicely diversified. In terms of vendors anyway. I saw a lot more random bric-a-brac this time around and some second-hand furniture with $20 price tags! I picked up a cool print of an old subway map for just $4, as well as a new wallet on sale for 25 bucks from Aissatou at Tessan Boutique (who was at the flea for the first time). map.jpg

Anyone else have any feedback?

THE FORT GREENE HOUSE TOUR, MAY 4, 2008 This year’s 29th Fort Greene House Tour, which takes place on Sunday, May 4th, from noon to 5pm, is guaranteed to be one of the most memorable ever. Visitors will have the rare opportunity to view a spectacular modern studio, designed by superstar architect David Adjaye for two well-known artists. This building is his first and only completed work in New York to date.

Other interesting stops on this exciting tour, will include an art filled Italianate Brownstone, featuring an exuberant interpretation of Victorian “Bohemian/Orientalism” inspired by Frederick Church’s Olana, several striking townhouse renovations, deftly blending period details and modern design, a charming 1850’s wood frame house and several fresh and stylish takes on modern living in 19th century spaces. Another singular home on this tour is a newly constructed residence that began in concept as an artist’s studio to occupy the expansive garden next to the owner’s home and morphed into a unique and luxurious four family residence, spanning a double lot and sharing a lushly planted, multi-level garden.

In addition to these fine private homes there will be stops at significant architectural and cultural landmarks in Fort Greene, from MoCADA [the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts] to the 1907 Masonic Temple with its fine terracotta façade and six pipe organs inside. Finally, visitors will have the chance to take in stunning views of Brooklyn and much of Manhattan from the thirtieth floor roof deck of the newly constructed Forte Condominiums.

This year the tour will commence from two locations, the main one at the BAM Garden, Fulton and Lafayette Avenue and the other at the Brooklyn Flea a new outdoor market on Lafayette and Clermont Avenues. Spend a magical afternoon in Fort Greene; enjoy a peek into some special homes, walk our beautiful tree lined streets, stroll through Fort Greene Park. Find out why Fort Greene is one of Brownstone Brooklyn’s most interesting neighborhoods.

Kenneth Murray Photographs

Born 1949 in Carlisle, England to an English father and Dutch mother, Ken Murray has traveled to the Greek island of Paros for the past 20 years. There he shoots pared-down images that isolate the subject from its original surroundings, transforming it into an individual object. He calls his style "graphic minimalism." Stunning in their abstract simplicity, the photographs have a beauty as timeless as the light that inspired them.

Murray has a degree in graphic design and photography from the Stadsacademie in Maastricht, the Netherlands, where he now lives. He is a frequent visitor to Brooklyn.

He has shown his photos widely:
