923 Fulton: THE SCOOP

dsc_0015.jpg This morning, I was working on a little Fulton Street photo session when I came across 923 Fulton (bt Clinton and Waverly), open and being renovated!  Many of you have asked WTF is going on, so I ran over and talked to the owner who was sweeping the sidewalk.  The answer?  Nothing, yet.  For now, the space is just being generally renovated and a realtor is working on finding an interested business tenant for the storefront.  The owner was really friendly, and asked me what I thought neighbors might want.  I, of course, mentioned a bakery and a book store.  Krumbs will be coming soon to CH North, but how nice would it be to have a bakery on Fulton?!  She wants to avoid a business that'll be doing "heavy cooking," but anything else is fair game.

So?  What do you want?  Leave comments and I'll report back to her.

Injured Cat

From a reader: hey there, if you guys can post this on the neighborhood blog(s) that would be great:

This morning my boyfriend and I took in a small black cat, medium hair, that was lying in the rain next to our co-op at 325 Clinton Ave. We took it in, it looked like it might have been hit by a car--it was immobile, very scared, and not moving -- although it was fairly alert/mewing, etc. Animal Control picked it up a few hours later. If anyone you know is missing a black cat, please let us know! (kinklosity -at- earthlink.net)

Poor kitty :(

organic fake-out on lexington

in the comments section for the post on the upcoming restaurant on greene + waverly, a reader asked: Have you checked out the new ‘organic market’ that just started to get all dolled up on Lexington btwn Grand and Classon? Crazy conversion… but needed.

and i was all ready to head down there this morning and check it out....until i went on the local parents' listserve. there was a discussion of the market going on there, and the truth came out: it isn't an organic market at all, but a set for a steve martin movie that's being filmed here.

bummer! on the plus side, if you like steve martin, they should be doing more filming this week....

Waverly Accident

Received this from a reader: We were driving to Prospect Park on Sat AM and saw, on the block of Waverly bet Fulton and Gates (home of the preemie martini) the most unbelievable car crash we'd ever seen anywhere. Even in, like, a James Cameron movie or anything. It looked like a Baghdad car bombing - there were 5 cars just torn to pieces and debris strewn all around.

Can't find a word about it anywhere - maybe it's not that noteworthy, but the ghoulish side of me is dying to know what happened.

Anything?

I couldn't find anything, either. Anyone know anything? (Also, the preemie martini can be found one block south, between Fulton and Atlantic, FYI.)

Selective Parking Rules

Received this note last week from a reader: I live on Grand Avenue at Lexington, and for the past nine months or so, I've been parking a car on the street. This has been a headache, of course, but certainly easier than a lot of other Brooklyn neighborhoods, despite the twice weekly street cleaning (why?!). One thing that makes it easier in the mornings for street cleaning: no one seems to mind, including the cops an metermaids, if you double park on the opposite side of the street for an hour and a half to avoid the street sweeper. Its very common to see a row of cars all double parked on Grand on any given morning. At 11:30, the owners park them again. I've seen ticketers ignore these cars while doling out tickets to street cleaning violators. Everyone seems okay with it, the neighbors and the cops.

But this morning I got a $115 ticket for being double parked! What gives? Any ideas about the arbitrariness of this system?

Since I'm at work most days, I had never heard of such a thing. Yet yesterday, when I stayed home in the morning nursing an ear infection (yes, apparently I am a 4-year-old), I noticed the same phenomenon on Waverly Ave!

Personally, I'd guess whoever ticketed said reader needed to fill a quota or was feeling particularly dickish that morning. Does anyone do this regularly, and if so, is there indeed an unspoken guarantee that you'll avoid a ticket if you double park? Also, what if someone parked at the curb gets shut in? Perhaps the cop ticketed that day because someone was inconvenienced?

And as a side note, double-parking seem to be a major problem in the 'hood. Just because you have your flashers on doesn't make it OK to double park up and down Clinton Avenue all the damn time. Now and then, OK, you need to pull over to pick someone up. But if I had a dime for every SUV double-parked on Clinton with flashers on, I could have paid off my mortgage and then some. (This is a separate issue from avoiding street cleaning tickets, and occurs mostly on weekend afternoons.)

Lost Cat

Just received this note: I live on Clinton Avenue between Myrtle & Park. I noticed that on your blog you have a section for pets. Is it possible to list a missing cat? We've been scouring the neighborhood all day and I thought that your blog might bring her home sooner, in case one of our neighbors has seen her.

This took us by surprise because we live on the second floor and we have a porch and we think that she must've jumped down somehow because there's no other way she could've gone out of the building. We've been in this house for about a year and half now, but this is a first.

Here is her description:

Sadie is 3 years old, she has black fur and yellow eyes. She's small to medium size, but her legs are rather short. She has been declawed (she's been a house cat until now). She isn't wearing her tags. She has been vaccinated and spayed. She isn't very friendly towards people she isn't used to. She was last seen on Clinton Avenue between Myrtle and Park. She may have traveled over to Vanderbilt via backyard spaces. If you have any information, please call my cell phone: 917-822-7231. Thank you so much, Sinclaire I'd be beside myself if I lost my cat or dog, so if you've seen Sadie, please call her owner:

Bakery Smells

Reader question: Everyday I ride my bike through the intersection of Washington and Atlantic and wonder where that wonderful bakery smell is coming from? It can't be that storage area and I reckon that it's not the McDonald's on Vanderbilt -- so where's it coming from? I wonder if you know.

Just curious! It's been on my mind forever.

I'm banking on the Hasidic bakery on Waverly near Atlantic. It's right near the brewery. Houseowax and I were going to stop in that day we hit up the brewery, but we were drunk and it was nearing sundown. I don't think it's the kind of place you can just pop into to pick up some cupcakes -- they probably do baking for kosher restaurants, etc.

Mirror's on Grand: UPDATE

*cringe* Every now and then, I check back on my favorite "coming soon" establishment, Mirror's on Grand. Nothing's ever changed. Thankfully, a neighbor noticed something veeeeery intriguing, and sent me this note:

I was walking by "Mirror's on Grand" today and noticed a sign in their window that says they are going before CB2 tonight as part of the process for getting a liquor (beer/wine) license for a bar/restaurant. This place has had me intrigued for the last year or so that it's been "coming soon" but I had noticed a little more activity in there recently. I guess it's not going to be a mirror store though, assuming they get the license! I'm imagining a sort of ghetto-glamorous night spot now, haha. It still seems a little dusty and unfinished in there for now, so who knows how much longer we will be on the edge of our seats in anticipation!

Liquor license! The plot thickens. Maybe I was wrong about the grammatical inaccuracies, and it's going to be a person named Mirror's restaurant/bar.

Demolition on Grand?

I recently received an email from a couple planning on moving to Grand Ave. They've heard there's some demo going on near the Grand-Lexington intersection and were wondering if it's noisy or problematic for nearby neighbors. Anyone nearby who wants to weigh in and share some info on this demo/construction project? (And BTW, "Mirror's on Grand" is STILL not open.)

Mystery of the Missing Plants

Brooklyn Record recently posted a story about landscaping in Clinton Hill being stolen. I hadn't heard about this before, but regular commenter 'houseowax' confirmed that he, too, has been a victim: SOMEONE actually STOLE the tree out of our planter yesterday afternoon! While we were home and in broad daylight!! Apparently ( according to my neighbor) there was a rash of flora pilfering a few years back; people were reluctant to plant anything! GRRRRRR. If you see our tree, a topiary cypress around 4 ft tall- gimme a shout. Someone needs an asskicking!

WTF?

BTW, according to Google Images, a topiary cypress could look something like this Here is an actual photo of the stolen tree:
