J+J Cafe

J&J Cafe I took the above photo on one of the few days J+J Cafe (Fulton nr Waverly) was actually open. Yes, I was inside! And I bought a croissant and a coffee! The staff was nice, but the space was a bit shoddy.

Not that it matters now, as it closed down as soon as they put up their official sign...

skinny building

I'd say until that skinny building is finished, there's little use opening anything in that space.  It's almost completely invisible!

Bodegas Gossip!

A source tells me that the space formerly occupied by Bodegas restaurant (SE corner of Fulton and Clinton, R.I.P.), is now slated to become an Italian fusion restaurant. The source tells me it will be called "Clinton Hill Bistro," but maybe she was confused as that's what the windows at Bodegas said. Or alternately, the new owners decided to just call the restaurant that and save themselves the trouble of redoing the windows. dscf1776.jpg

Last I heard it was supposed to be a bank.

Remember when Bodegas took over that extra space on the far left for catering? The sign said, "Occasions." Did that ever even open?

'Cure BK

'Cure is open on Fulton at Clinton!  All I can say is: WOW.  The interior is lovely -- very West Elm-ish -- and the setup unique.  Manicures are done at a long, tall table instead of the usual low desk setup, and pedis take place on plush chairs near the back, utilizing huge blue glass bowls instead of the standard vibrating salon chairs. They sell candles and jewelry (the latter displayed artfully in a fish tank) and also do massages, waxing and threading. dscf1575.jpg So far, I've been twice.  Hey, I need to check out the services so I can tell you about them, right?  On my first visit, a friendly, warm woman named Honey gave me a wonderfully indulgent pedicure.  She was even extra careful scrubbing my very ticklish feet.  Yesterday, I swung in at lunchtime to try the brow lady. Thumbs up.

Owner LaShunda has definitely incorporated the neighborhood into the spa's services -- the list of special pedicures includes a "Carol's Daughter" pedi using all products produced by the famous Fort Greene shop.

The only drawback?  Manhattan prices.  Still, worth it for the upscale facilities, friendly staff and high-end services on a relaxing afternoon now and then.  I love that Fulton has such a pretty new storefront! dscf1574.jpg

923 Fulton: THE SCOOP

dsc_0015.jpg This morning, I was working on a little Fulton Street photo session when I came across 923 Fulton (bt Clinton and Waverly), open and being renovated!  Many of you have asked WTF is going on, so I ran over and talked to the owner who was sweeping the sidewalk.  The answer?  Nothing, yet.  For now, the space is just being generally renovated and a realtor is working on finding an interested business tenant for the storefront.  The owner was really friendly, and asked me what I thought neighbors might want.  I, of course, mentioned a bakery and a book store.  Krumbs will be coming soon to CH North, but how nice would it be to have a bakery on Fulton?!  She wants to avoid a business that'll be doing "heavy cooking," but anything else is fair game.

So?  What do you want?  Leave comments and I'll report back to her.

New Spa on Fulton!

Looks like a new round of pioneers are setting out to jump-start the scene on Fulton. I caught a glimpse of this new awning over the weekend: new spa/salon salon on fultonA Google search provided this posting from craigslist:

I just gave them a call and the owner, Lashunda, informed me that they'll be opening on August 22 24 and are really excited to be a part of the neighborhood. Wishing them luck! So far so good with the well-designed awning...

Located between Clinton and Waverly.

New Florist: 1001 Affairs

Last week, I mentioned that the florist on Fulton had closed. Commentors were correct about a NEW florist taking over -- they're already open! Called 1001 Affairs, they already have a case stocked with fresh flowers (though there are some fake flowers in the front windows...eh). dsc_0040.jpg dsc_0042.jpg

They participate with Teleflora, which means they should be stocked with all the essentials, plus be able to turn out some pretty nice arrangements.

I was pleasantly surprised to find a small, but nice selection of greeting cards as well. They have plenty of granny-style traditional cards, but have one section dedicated to cool, artsy cards. I picked up two of these:

dsc_0004.jpg

The store owner's brother picked these up for him -- they're handmade, and I took the last ones (sorry!). But he's set to get more. Hopefully if enough of us shop there for cool cards, he'll keep a huge supply in stock.

Florist Shuttered on Fulton

Looks like the "looks-from-the-outside-but-not-on-the-inside" florist/garden shop on Fulton near St. James Place has closed.  It always looked so cute from the street, but the inside simply had a few plants and a selection of mylar balloons. I'll keep an eye on what might be happening.  Maybe a good florist will open there? (please?????)

Live Jazz: Who Knew?

Turns out there's live jazz in our 'hood regularly! I've been meaning to check out Parlour Jazz on Vanderbilt since moving to the neighborhood, but never have. Apparently, the jazz club is housed in a brick townhouse between Myrtle and Park. Parlor Jazz 718-855-1981 www.parlorjazz.com

The website takes me back to 1996, but I'm definitely going to make checking this out a priority

I've also seen web mention of something called Jazz 966, which seems to happen at 966 Fulton. This also may or may not be an old folks home? Jazz 966 718-638-6910

Finally, it appears that this renovated space, called LOX, next to Kush on Fulton is slated to be a new jazz club!

dscf1265.jpg

If it opens while I'm away, I expect a FULL report.

Hallelujah

The boarded-up Cathedral of Deliverance near the worst post office ever is going condo!936fulton7.jpg

The building will be called Fulton on Clinton, which I think it a bit deceiving. Makes it sound like it's on the corner of Clinton and Fulton, when it just refers to the building being IN Clinton Hill.

The exterior rendering looks really nice, and prices don't seem too outrageous. Though the listing does say Fort Greene. I'd think by this point, listing "Clinton Hill" would be a selling point. building.jpg

Inside? These computer-based images are hard to really judge, but it looks like something I would live in. Though I'd pick a different paint color for the kitchen, and it doesn't look like it has much counter space. But it does have a washer-dryer (swoon). livingroomfinal.jpg

Two units go on the market Sunday. Just a warning- if you buy here, you have to pick up packages at Adelphi Station! What do you think should move into the retail space? Hopefully this storefront will help fill in the gaps on Fulton and further tie it together as a decent destination (Olivino, Kush, Outpost and Brown Betty are all favorites of mine on/near Fulton). Brownstoner coverage here.

Wine Tasting @ Olivino: Tonight

Hi Everybody, Rudy Eilers will be here this Friday evening April 6th, with a delicious sampling of wines from Italy. We are going to have a lovely collection of three new whites to get you ready for all your spring and summer celebrations -- crisp, clean, zingy and refreshing, all.

And we'll be tasting a gorgeous red from a Piedmontese wine maker Bruno Porro-- A Dolcetto, graced with the image of an old, lumbering tree, is rich and fruity with a bright, mineraly finish.

We're experiencing a collective mouth-watering just thinking about these wines!

Come by, between 6:30 and 9:30, and taste for yourself. As always, we look forward to seeing you there.

Cheers!
