First Fridays at RePop: May 4

shadows.jpg Recently featured in Best of NY 2007 for Best Vintage / Thrift Shop, please join RePOP 95% Recycled at 68 Washington Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11205 this Friday May 4th, 2007 for our spring art event featuring fine artist and photographer, Dominic Albo.

Dominic features works of context and depth through the use of collage, transfers, oil, acrylic and epoxy on canvas, wood and paper. His art focuses on shadows. The taut, textured canvas embraces the shadow to present a luminous and ephemeral subject. In his wood pieces the solidity of the wood evokes a different reaction. It tells a story of permanence and allows the shadow to take root.

Complimentary wine reception is from 7:30 - 11pm so come on down to the Navy Yard, mingle with fine art and get your vintage groove on!

All vintage furnishings, collectibles and decoratives in shop on First Friday are 10% off.

"Shadows' will be on exhibition at RePOP from May 4 - 30.

G train to Clinton/Washington Ave. RePOP is located between Park and Flushing just 5 blocks North.

Music and Me Photographs by Jennie Baptiste

May 14th – June 16th 2007

Jennie Baptiste was born in London, where she still lives. Hailing from the Caribbean island of St Lucia, her parents came to London in the sixties. She attended the London College of Communication and received a B.A. with Honors in Photography at the University of Westminster.

As a photographer, her work is inspired by youth culture and music in relation to her identity. She has documented the music phenomenon dancehall, as well as the rise and influence of hip-hop and tattoos -- the latest fashion accessory within the hip- hop culture. Artists she has photographed include Nas, Mary J. Blige, Mos Def, and De La Soul, for clients that ranged from Nike to Virgin Airways to Sony Music.

“Music and Me” is about her influences and the subject matter that has helped define her photography within portraiture overall.

“I continue to be fascinated by the influence of black youth culture in London. I wish to use my work to inform and educate people beyond the stereotypes, so that our history is also their history, creating a greater understanding of the different cultural diversities that makes up British society, here and beyond.”

Her photographs have been exhibited widely in Paris, Berlin, and London, including the show “Black British Style” at the Victoria and Albert Museum. In addition, her work is included in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London. Jennie is also curator of a photographic exhibition on the Maroon People of Jamaica, which will tour London and Jamaica.

Reception: Friday, May 18th 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.

The 411 on the Preemie Martini

I noticed this little clip in the Brooklyn Paper a few weeks ago: "Some eyebrows were dancing recently, when the Jelani Lounge, on Waverly Avenue and Fulton Street, announced a new drink called "the Preemie Martini." Turns out, the drink -- an apple martini in a miniature glass -- is owner Guy Soley's tribute to his son, Jelani, who was born premature, but has since grown up into a healthy and strong lad. That made the "preemie" joke fair game, Soley told us...

Well, at least it's an answer.

Wine Tasting @ Olivino: Tonight

Hi Everybody, Rudy Eilers will be here this Friday evening April 6th, with a delicious sampling of wines from Italy. We are going to have a lovely collection of three new whites to get you ready for all your spring and summer celebrations -- crisp, clean, zingy and refreshing, all.

And we'll be tasting a gorgeous red from a Piedmontese wine maker Bruno Porro-- A Dolcetto, graced with the image of an old, lumbering tree, is rich and fruity with a bright, mineraly finish.

We're experiencing a collective mouth-watering just thinking about these wines!

Come by, between 6:30 and 9:30, and taste for yourself. As always, we look forward to seeing you there.

Cheers!

Brewery on Waverly!

Who knew Waverly Ave between Fulton and Atlantic was such a hotbed of intrigue! The filming of TV shows (Hammered for HGTV, Cover Shot for TLC), the Preemie Martini, etc. My latest discovery: A BREWERY! Reader houseowax tipped me off to this place, and after a whole lot of Googling, I made contact with the brewers. A few Fridays ago during the ice storm, houseowax and I set off for a tour (and tasting). Their building on Waverly used to be a dairy: beer gets brewed inside here

home of kelso of brooklyn

The brewery is called Greenpoint Beer Works, as Kelly Taylor (who built the facility and manages operations) makes Greenpoint his home. Inside, GPW brews all of Heartland Brewery's beers (where Taylor got his start) as well as their own new brand, Kelso of Brooklyn.

Right now, they're only set up to brew kegs, but Kelly tells me bottling for Kelso is in the works. It's the next step in the business plan.

Used barley is occasionally used for bread by the employees or given to local community gardens for compost, but most often is given to farmers to use as pig slop. barley

We tried the Barlywine (10% alcohol = fast buzz!) and Scotch Ale- a smooth ale with very little hops and a nice roasted barley flavor. Both were delicious!

They also make natural sodas: soda flavoring

Taylor does offer special tours here and there, but the brewery is not yet equipped for regular visitors. He mentioned potentially looking into opening some sort of summer beer garden situation, but was unsure if people would come. Houseowax and I were thrilled with the idea, so if you think you'd patronize, give a shout-out here so we can tell him how awesome business would be. I also mentioned having a CHB 1-year Anniversary party there, to which he seemed receptive (July-ish. Be There).

For now, you can enjoy Kelso's brews on tap at 67 Burger in Ft. Greene and Soda in Prospect Hts, and at other semi-nearby bars and restaurants. For more info, check out their site.

(I am tagging this under "nightlife," in the hopes that there will be a beer garden.)

Bar on Waverly: More Info

Months ago, we discovered something that looked like a new bar on Waverly between Fulton and Atlantic. I recently found someone inside, who gave me this promo card: bar1.jpg

"Who Knew." Argh! Despite this list of events being alphabetical, it's kind of odd that baby showers would be listed first. I'm not sure what a Preemie Martini is, but I hope it's not referring to babies born early. Anyhow, the inside does, in fact, look pretty cool, so maybe someone out there in CH wants to host their baby shower there and report back? And of course, their website is not up yet.
