A HALLOWEENIE EXTRAVAGANZA: PHOTOGRAPHY by LUCIA COUSINS & ELIZABETH LAMBERT

RePOP is proud to present their first photography exhibition featuring the electrifying work of two Brooklyn based photographers, Elizabeth Lambert and Lucia Cousins. Inspired by the ebb and flow of New York as well as the unique and haunting, these artists capture the beautiful fleeting remnants of a metropolis, examining closely the seen but often misunderstood spaces within the whole that pass us by in our hustle and bustle from one place to the next. By-gone grafitti, advertisements, surreal images, doll babies with soul, subway tunnels and sensual silhouettes are all represented in this glorious body of work soaring above the obvious to analyze the bits and parts of what makes an urban jungle tick.

And back due to popular demand in conjunction with November 2 First Friday, RePOP will be hosting their 2nd annual Ghoulish Halloweenie Extravaganza. The festivities begin around 7:30 pm and carry on to the wee hours both within the shop and our private back room. The event will be catered by the scrumptious talents of Urban Palate* and costumes are required with a grand prize awarded to the best! All attendees are encouraged to bring an offering of their favorite poison to contribute on this evening of art, dance and merriment.

First Fridays at RePop: October 5

picture-3.png On October 5th from 7:30 - 11pm RePOP invites you to join us at the shop for our First Friday group show entitled Under All The Rocks We Have Ever Found featuring the mixed media works of husband and wife duo Amy Michelle Asher & Arian Gimbutas.

With Amy working primarily in tar and Arian in bleach (combinined with oil and ink), both artists explore the vastness of space and light. The colors they are able to discover within two such contrasting mediums is at once haunting and astounding. This particular collection, all created within the last year, offers a beautiful entrance into the fall season with an adornment of abstract landscapes, illustrative renderings and unique musings.

The shop will be open for business on this special evening offering a first hand glimpse at Asher and Gimbutas' collection. Come down to the Navy Yard and enjoy a wonderful social event with complimentary wine, snacks and 10% off all merchandise.

Thanks to all who attended Friday's Anniversary party! We had a great turnout and it was great to meet so many readers! Kelso of Brooklyn provided a keg of tasty brew -- hope you were able to try some. It was a huge hit in the back patio area! Their presence on tap in Brooklyn bars has been growing steadily, so make sure to check for them when you're out on the town. the cake!

Community Dining at Grub

Several months ago, TimeOut printed a small chart highlighting various community dining opportunities in the city. One of them takes place on Flushing Ave. just past Classon. Anyone is welcome -- first come, first served -- and you "pay what you can." Here's the catch: the food is pilfered from garbage cans and dumpsters, and then cooked! I've Googled the event, and have come up with this:

A cheap, simple dinner for strangers and co-conspirators.

We are a small group of people who do a lot of other things in New York, like decorate subways and throw parties in the streets. We work with several collectives and art groups, like Toyshop, Madagascar Institute, and In Our Hearts. At Grub we're just offering dinner.

Whether you are active in other collectives, your neighborhood, your backyard garden, or just new to town, we invite you to our table. To get a little squishy, we are looking for practical ways to build community. We are particularly inspired by weekly dinners served at squats in Amsterdam and Berlin, where you can get a cheap, tasty meal and catch up with friends in a cozy room. We like parties as much as anyone, but we think there should be places to talk without a pounding sound system.

We are not gourmets or fancy cooks; we offer simple food simply prepared. We will only be able to serve 40 people, first come first serve. There will be plates for vegans and vegetarians alike. Please come early and hang out.

Never a mention of the dumpster diving.

I even walked past the space once, and found someone inside. He was really nice, and said they always get a big group of interesting folks. I'm KIND of tempted to try it out, but the whole trash thing scares me.

The interior space is pretty wacky -- filled to the brim with colorful artifacts and artsy stuff.

First Fridays at RePop: July 6

On July 6, you are cordially invited to celebrate the New York debut of the fine and absract artist, Fred J. Henzel

Henzel is an amazing up and coming talent who is a true master composing mixed media attractions in a fluently raw style. Credited for linking Frued to Kandinsky, his stunning figurative works juxtaposed with depictions of a bright yet crumbling society are both haunting and ethereal with an intention to evoke the senses.

Henzel lives and breathes his work, combining the city streets for discarded relics and reinstating their lost grandeur into "a hopeful apocalypse."

Artist Reception is from 7:30 - 11, so come on down to the Navy Yard, grab a glass of wine, mingle with the art and get your vintage groove on.

10% of all proceeds this First Friday will be donated to the Motor City Youth Theatre of Detroit, MI. MYCT is a non-profit community group who have initiated a higher cultural awareness among Midwestern youngsters and teens since 1980. For more information log on to: http://mcyt.org/

Notes on the BQE

Have you noticed that lately the BQE running over Park seems to be...leaking? Water is ALWAYS pouring off of it and onto Park, even when it's not raining. Where is this water coming from? Maybe it's best not to know. why is the BQE leaking?Also, this free parking under the overpass seems weird to me. Obviously people are parking here, and it seems it's allowed. But it seems like parking there screams, "Steal/damage my car!" Anyone park there? The arrangement seems very intriguing.

tonight was the first meeting of the new "green fort greene and clinton hill" initiative. it's being spearheaded by jed marcus, a local attorney, longtime fort greene resident, and board member of the fort greene association, which, along with the socity for clinton hill, is lending its support. so what exactly is this initiative, you say? basically, it's aim is to make our neighborhood—our homes, our streets, our local businesses—as environmentally friendly and forward-thinking as possible. which will be good for us, of course, and also serve as a model to other neighborhoods/towns.

the initial goals are:

"1) encouraging the purchase of electricity from renewable sources that do not contribute to global warming; 2) adding many trees and other greenery to our streets; 3) flooding our neighborhood with energy efficient light bulbs; 4) increasing recycling and reducing refuse; and 5) assembling a green map, showing the area's environmental strengths and challenges, for publication this fall in the hill" (which, if you haven't seen it around, is our free local quarterly, available at many local businesses).

the meeting tonigh was attended by about thirty people, including representatives from marp and st. joseph's. a general introduction to the project and it's goals was given and a few committees were put together.

one group will begin work on the tree project—the first step will be walking the local streets, locating spots on the sidewalks where more trees could be planted. this survey will then be submitted to the city, and hopefully they will begin planting next spring. the tree progam is going to be carried out in partnership with the local elementary schools, so that part of the planning—coordinating efforts with the teachers, providing materials to the schools—was also discussed.

another group is going to be talking to con ed about helping to get the word out in the neighborhood about switching to green power, and making it easy for people to do so, possibly by hosting a sign-up event in the neighborhood. they'll also be pushing con ed to offer incentives (e.g. a discount on your bill) if a large enough percentage of people and/or businesses in the neighborhood change over to the green power.
