Serial Rapist?

I admit I am behind on this story, but it's worth posting to make sure everyone is extra aware of this story.  Just because it is the middle of the day, doesn't mean one is safe from a crime. Here is the info from Tish James' office:

Armed Sexual Assaults Indicate Possible Serial Rapist in Central Brooklyn (Brooklyn, NY) A man is wanted for two sexual assaults in Brooklyn, which happened near Franklin Avenue and Fulton Street.  The sketch below of the rapist was released by police. Tuesday’s armed attack of a 42-year-old, near Franklin Avenue and Fulton Street mirrors the sexual assault that occurred on March 16 when an armed man approached a 56-year-old women. He took both of his victims to isolated areas, raped them and struck them on the head with a firearm before fleeing on foot.  This rapist attacked during the early morning hours, as well as in the late afternoon. “In light of two recent sexual attacks that occurred in the ‘border district’ between the 79th and 88th Police Precincts, a possible gap in NYPD coverage is cause for concern.  I call for an undercover detail in that area, and well as increased early morning patrols at transit facilities, including the Franklin shuttle, and C train.  This attacker seems to be aware of the black hole in policing that exists on the edge of Clinton Hill and Bedford Stuyvesant,” said Council Member James. Police described Tuesday’s attacker as 25 to 35; between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-11; 160 to 180 pounds; wearing a green jacket, dark pants, and white sneakers. The cases are under investigation by Brooklyn’s Special Victims Unit. “In light of the recent sexual assaults and muggings that have occurred over the past few weeks on our streets, the CLEXY (Classon, Lexington, and Quincy Block Association) group is urging Police Commissioner Kelly to increase the police presence in the 88th Precinct.  We are in desperate need of more foot patrol, particularly during the late night, early morning shift,” said Laura Benko, vice president of CLEXY. Police ask that anyone with information about this incident call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). Tips can also be submitted by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website or by texting to 274637 (CRIMES) then entering TIP577.

Old Tree Damaged by Storm

A reader snapped this shot of a beautiful old tree on the Washington Park side of Fort Greene Park that was damaged by the recent rain storm.  No word yet if it will have to come down.  I know a tree is a plant and not a person, but it makes me sad to see that a living thing that's been in the park for so many years, and so many generations of neighborhood residents, might be removed.

Fort Greene PUPS Annual Spring Cleaning

This weekend: bring your dog to off leash, help clean up, and earn treats!  This info just in from Fort Greene PUPS:

Every spring in Fort Greene Park, Fort Greene PUPS hosts our annual poop pick-up. We call it a treasure hunt, since it is sometimes difficult to find the offending substance. We realize that runs contrary to what some park users think, but all you have to do is look in one of the trash cans at Fort Greene Park to see that the majority of dog owners do indeed pick up after their dogs. Unfortunately, there are some renegades who are either unobservant or uncaring, so PUPS works to promote responsibility among local dog owners. And since us dog folks use the park 365 days a year, we are usually the ones who end up stepping in dog doo if it gets left behind. Not to mention the hardworking park staff, who get the unenviable task of cleaning up the mess when it's not picked up by dog owners.

In the war against poo, PUPS knows that a once yearly clean-up is a drop in the bucket. We do our best, but as you can imagine, this "event" is a hard sell. To promote this unglamorous affair in the past, we've had a "Grand Poo-Bah" poop weighmaster come in and weigh the amounts picked up, with the winner walking away with a prize.

This year PUPS is trying something new for our annual spring cleaning. We're giving away plastic Easter eggs stuffed with a free poop bag, dog ScooterSnack, and chocolate egg. We'll be in the park during morning off-leash hours this Saturday and Sunday distributing the eggs. If you have a dog, and you use the park, consider it your doo-ty to clean up any leftovers from winter.

Parents Around the Hill

I do not have children, nor am I expecting, but I am definitely more aware of kid-related stuff now than I was when I started this blog four years ago.  Recently, I came across a group called Parents Around the Hill.  It's members only, but looks to be a free group. Are any readers members?  Membership is restricted to parents and expectant parents, so I can't join and tell you more about it.

What are your favorite kid-related resources in the neighborhood?

Multiple shootings within the 88th Police Precinct in the last two weeks

(Brooklyn, NY) - Two men, approximately 30 and 70 years old, were injured Thursday evening about 8:30 pm in a drive-by shooting on Clinton Avenue, between Gates and Greene Avenues.  Their injuries were not serious, and the older was an innocent victim struck by a bullet intended for the other man, in what appeared to be a drug-related shooting.

“It is imperative that the 88th Police Precinct be declared an Impact Zone now,” said Council Member James. “There have been five shooting victims within this precinct in the last two weeks, and it is clear that more resources are needed. I call on Commissioner Kelly to respond to the critical public safety needs within the 88th Precinct immediately.”  ###

Sticking to a simple post title going forward.  Here's more news about the neighborhood:

BREAKING: Drive By Shooting on Clinton and Greene

So I was just on my way out to Alibi, to meet Mr. Lesterhead to watch the Ohio U game, when I saw cops directing traffic off of Clinton Avenue.  I turned around and saw some flashing lights, so I took a detour.  And what I found was not good.

From what I could piece together from the witnesses on the street, a car drove by quickly and fired three shots.  A middle aged man went down, but apparently the bullet hit his wallet and he wasn't hurt (and if so, not seriously).  When I arrived, the man was still on the ground, but was sitting up (and texting when he was on the stretcher).

Witnesses who heard and saw the shooting were shocked.  One man said, "It happened to quick, you know, and it's so quiet around here now.  I heard the pops and I saw him laying down."

Apparently the cops were on the scene in a flash and they were rolling out the crime scene tape when I headed back inside to post this.  (Note to self: set up Wordpress iPhone app!).

The good news: the victim seemed mostly, if not completely, fine.  The bad news: who is doing a drive-by shooting at 9pm at a middle aged man walking by himself?!

PS- you heard it first on Clinton Hill Blog!

Two New Food Markets on Myrtle

According to the Myrtle Minutes blog, there are TWO new food markets opening on Myrtle:

  • An organic market at 375 Myrtle next to Walgreen's (opening TBD)
  • Mr. Coco, a small grocer carrying (surprise) organic goods at 414 Myrtle near Clinton (scheduled to open yesterday)

I'm all for variety, so we'll see what these vendors can offer that the others aren't.  I just hope that having so many won't dilute business across the board (don't forget Fresh Fanatic on Washington, Green Planet on Fulton, and even the two Associated markets - on Myrtle and on Waverly - which have been carrying more "fancy" goods).

Pratt Post Office: How's It Going?

I never thought I'd be glad to say that my post office is Adelphi Station, but it's true! So far, I've heard of some snafus up at Pratt.  A northside neighbor recently received a package slip notifying him that he had a package for pickup at Bushwick Station, and after spending a whole morning trekking out there and waiting in line, they told him his package was actually being held at the mobile van on Myrtle outside Pratt Station!

UG.  My suggestion - no matter what the slip says, just check the trailer first.

Reading at Greenlight Bookstore by Gabriel Thompson: TONIGHT

Tuesday, March 16, 2010 7:30pm - 9:00pm Greenlight Bookstore 686 Fulton Street (@ the corner of South Portland) Join Young Friends of PACC for the Working in the Shadows Book Reading!

What is it like doing the back-breaking work of low-wage immigrants? To find out, Gabriel Thompson spent the year working alongside Latino immigrants, who initially thought he was either crazy or an undercover immigration agent. He stooped over lettuce fields in Arizona and worked the graveyard shift at a chicken slaughterhouse in rural Alabama. He dodged taxis as a bicycle delivery “boy” for an upscale Manhattan restaurant and was fired from a flower shop in Chelsea. Combining personal narrative with investigative reporting, Working in the Shadows shines a bright light on the underside of the American economy, exposing harsh working conditions, union busting, and lax government enforcement—while telling the stories of workers, undocumented immigrants and desperate US citizens alike, forced to live with chronic pain in the pursuit of $8 an hour.

Not so long before he went undercover as part of the low-wage immigrant workforce, Brooklyn-based author Gabriel Thompson was the director of community organizing at PACC. The Young Friends of PACC are thrilled to host this book reading at Greenlight Bookstore in Fort Greene.

Arrive early, light refreshments and wine will be served.

Young Friends of PACC is dedicated to engaging community members in their 20s and 30s in activities supporting affordable housing, tenant rights, community and economic development in Central Brooklyn.

Dine in Brooklyn: Starts Tonight!

I've heard varying opinions on the Dine in Brooklyn promotion, mainly that the portions are small and you don't get to try the best stuff from the regular menu.  Whether you're a fan or not, it's a good reminder of what's available right down the street.  (Or hey, be adventurous and try a different neighborhood!) Here are the participating restaurants in Clinton Hill and Fort Greene (I have bolded my personal favs):

L = lunch

D = dinner

Lunchtime With Tillie: Amin

“It’s Tillie and Pops/Tillie and Pops/We’re pullin’ out all the stops/It’s Tillie and Pops/Tillie and Pops/Better watch out and call the cops … ” Hey everyone , and welcome back to Lunchtime With Tillie! I was feeling a little nostalgic so I thought I’d share some of the lyrics to a little song I made up when I started staying home with Tillie. That song came to mind because this is the first LWT of 2010 where it’s just the two of us as Tillie’s mom couldn’t make it out. (She says hi!) We missed her, but the show must go on, and that it did as T and I went to Indian restaurant Amin on Dekalb Avenue.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I’m usually a Kinara’s guy: Really good food and a great lunch special (50 percent off the whole menu!) make it hard to top. But since Tillie and I hadn’t gone to Amin yet in our food forays, I thought it would be nice to drop by. And personally, I hadn’t been there since way back when it was the only show in town. Back then, I wasn’t blown away by it, but things change, so who knows?

Anyway, we got to the place kind of late one afternoon and it was empty, except for the employees. Tillie and I had our run of the place as far as seating went, so I took a spot where I could leave the stroller unfolded. I got a high chair from one of the guys working there, but bad news: The buckle to strap the kid in was broken and it was the only high chair they had. Great, I thought, because keeping Tillie down in a high chair is tough under optimal conditions and these conditions were a little far from that. I set her in it, with extra attention paid to her escape ambitions!

She had a menu to play with that kept her occupied, while I took a look at mine to see the lunch specials. I usually go for a lamb dish when I eat Indian food, so I picked the lamb bhuna this time: chunks of lamb cooked in a thick, spicy sauce. I ordered that, along with some plain nan and an order of samosas for an appetizer.

While we waited for the food, Tillie noticed an elephant statue on the floor that she wanted to go over and play with. I took her out of the chair—which wasn’t too hard, seeing as how she wasn’t exactly strapped down—and let her walk over to the statue. She pet it a few times, pointed at the various studs adjoining it and pretty much just got a kick out of it. In the midst of this fun time, the samosas arrived.

We got back to the table, ready to dig in—or at least I was: Tillie was still thinking about her new pal on the floor. I thought samosas—pastries stuffed with potatoes and peas—would be perfect for Tillie, so I gave her the first bite. She seemed to like it, so I followed her up with a bite of my own. It was OK, nothing to write home about. The samosas were served over a brown sauce and a green sauce. (Sorry I don’t know the proper names of them, but I’m sure you readers out there know what I’m talking about: I can call them brown samosa sauce and green samosa sauce!) Tillie liked the brown better than the green, and me? I’m kind of ambivalent about them: I guess I’m not the sauce-distinguishing connoisseur that Tillie is!

The lamb, rice and lamb arrived shortly after and I have to say, it all looked pretty good. I took a bite of the lamb first to see if it was going to be too spicy for Tillie. I thought it had a little kick to it, so I gave T some rice with the brown samosa sauce on it. She was eating that pretty steadily, which was a good sign as far as her getting a decent serving of food in her lil’ tummy. I was able to fix myself some lamb over the rice and I have to say I was a little disappointed. The first bite I took before serving Tillie didn’t blow me away and the follow-up failed to, as well. The dish was a little greasy and the sauce seemed to be like a coagulant over the meat: In other words, it wasn’t enough to hit all the rice. And as far as dipping my nan in the sauce, forget about it: There just wasn’t much to go around. I tried to offer Tillie some nan dipped in what little sauce I could muster up, but she wasn’t interested.

As I mentioned, the dish had a little kick to it, so I finished my water early on in the meal. I was about halfway through with my food before anyone came back around to give me any more. Tillie’s sippy cup of milk never looked so good …

I ended up giving Tillie a taste of the lamb and rice, and it wasn’t too much for her to handle. Then I finished up and asked for the check. When it came, it reflected my whole experience there: disappointing. The bill was $14.35, not including the tip, which is a little much for a below ho-hum meal.

So in other words, I don’t think we’ll be back: The lunch special wasn’t that special, the water was distributed as if they were conserving it and there’s only one broken high chair. But I guess T had fun with that elephant, so if she wants to go back, she’s picking up the check: Her half of the royalties on the “Tillie and Pops” song should be enough to cover it.

We're Back!

Thanks for your patience, everyone.  It took longer than I'd hoped, but CHB is now virus free and we're ready to move along. I've felt for the last few weeks that I've let my long-time readers down, since  I have been able to post here almost every weekday for the last (almost) four years.  This incident was frustrating because the site will probably never allow me to work on it as a full-time job, and as life gets more busy it is nearly impossible to address urgent blog matters as soon as they arise.  Please know that I worked diligently to get back online, and that often times my personal and paying obligations must come first.

That said, as always, we welcome contributions from residents who are interested in writing and obvserving the neighborhood to help keep the site going and the topics vibrant. Interested? Email clintonhillblog-at-gmail-dot-com.

Please bear with me while I play catch up on all of my outstanding posts!
