Ellie Balk

September 5th – October 7th, 2007 Between the Extremes

Ellie Balk lives in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, and travels frequently to the Pacific Northwest. She oversees mural projects and other examples of “collaborative art” in both locations, with a keen eye towards local landscapes, both physical and social.

The paintings in this exhibition function as documents of process, created through layers of paint and imagery. The works are expressions of both tension and beauty, and the balance of the space that lives between the extremes. Color, line, expression, documentation, and fantasy all find common ground and harmony on found objects and canvases.

Balk has an M.F.A. from Pratt Institute in Painting and Art History and a B.A. in Art History from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. She also studied painting in Florence, Italy. She has exhibited her work widely in New York, Portland, Oregon, and in the Midwest. She has been a Teaching Artist at the 92nd St. Y Art Center in Manhattan, as well as the Rotunda Gallery in Brooklyn, and has executed numerous mural projects in the New York City public schools and at street fairs and block parties.

Comic Art at St. Joseph's

LOST TREASURE: ORIGINAL COMIC ART FROM THE COLLECTION OF DAN NADEL BROOKLYN, N.Y. - August 21, 2007 - St. Joseph's College's Council for the Arts is proud to present Lost Treasure: The Original Comic Art from the Collection of Dan Nadel. This exhibit will be on display at the Alumni Room Gallery, Tuohy Hall, 245 Clinton Avenue, Brooklyn, N.Y., from September 5th to October 11. There will be a gallery talk on Wednesday, September 19th at 12:40 p.m.

In addition, there will be receptions on Thursday, September 13th from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and also on Saturday, September 15th from 12:00 p.m. to 3 p.m. All are free and open to the general public. Regular gallery hours are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 12 to 3 p.m.

Following the wildly popular LACMA Masters of Comics exhibition, Lost Treasure seeks to fill in the historical gaps of the record of this uniquely American artform. Culled from the personal collection of Dan Nadel, a professor of illustration at the Parsons School of Design, this exhibition is a unique opportunity to view some of the truly lost treasures of American art. Dating from the early 20th century to today, Nadel's collection includes traditional Sunday newspaper comic strip art as well as avant-garde comics produced by underground cartoonists from the 1960's to present day.

Founded by Sister Elizabeth A. Hill, CSJ, J.D., president, the St. Joseph’s College Council for the Arts is a coalition of students, faculty members and staff who serve as a focal point for St. Joseph’s College’s educational and community outreach programming in the arts. By expanding and integrating campus arts activities, the Council seeks to enhance the public image of the College as a cultural center in Brooklyn and aims to make arts and cultural events more accessible to its students and area neighbors. CH History at Clinton Hill Art Gallery

Yesterday, Clinton Hill Art Gallery sponsored a talk with Margaret and Joan Vincent, two sisters who have spent their entire lives living in Clinton Hill. I found out about it only minutes before it started -- the Brooklyn Paper sent me over to take some photos -- so I was able to run over and sit in for part of the talk. (They'll have a full article about the event in the next issue.)The sisters, who have lived in the nabe since the 1930s, talked about all the fun they had here as children. They frequented a movie theater on Myrtle Ave, which once stood near Connecticut Muffin, and ice skated in Fort Greene Park, on a rink that stood where the tennis courts are now. In the 1940s, they lamented the loss of the mansions and yards razed to build what would become the Clinton Hill Co-ops between Myrtle and Willoughby, as they used to sled and play there.

And guess what Clinton Hill had a lot of back then? Bakeries. Go figure.

Clinton Hill Art Gallery does a series of August parlor chats every year, and it looks like the Vincent Sisters may have been the last one. The gallery's owner, L.B. Brown, has been a true pioneer, opening an art and framing shop on Myrtle in 1991, and the gallery in 2004.

Sorry I didn't know in advance, but there was a Clinton Hill Street Fair on Saturday, on Clinton between Willoughby and Myrtle. Looked like some residents selling tasty food, some clothing and jewelry for sale, and a stage with live performances. And, look who I met!

Borough Prez Marty Markowitz! He was super friendly and meeting and greeting CH residents. Personally, I'm anti-Atlantic Yards, but I'll give it up for Marty for his Brooklyn spirit and his ability to be everywhere for everything Brooklyn. He also said he's proud that we're the Bloggiest neighborhood in the country!

Community Dining at Grub

Several months ago, TimeOut printed a small chart highlighting various community dining opportunities in the city. One of them takes place on Flushing Ave. just past Classon. Anyone is welcome -- first come, first served -- and you "pay what you can." Here's the catch: the food is pilfered from garbage cans and dumpsters, and then cooked! I've Googled the event, and have come up with this:

A cheap, simple dinner for strangers and co-conspirators.

We are a small group of people who do a lot of other things in New York, like decorate subways and throw parties in the streets. We work with several collectives and art groups, like Toyshop, Madagascar Institute, and In Our Hearts. At Grub we're just offering dinner.

Whether you are active in other collectives, your neighborhood, your backyard garden, or just new to town, we invite you to our table. To get a little squishy, we are looking for practical ways to build community. We are particularly inspired by weekly dinners served at squats in Amsterdam and Berlin, where you can get a cheap, tasty meal and catch up with friends in a cozy room. We like parties as much as anyone, but we think there should be places to talk without a pounding sound system.

We are not gourmets or fancy cooks; we offer simple food simply prepared. We will only be able to serve 40 people, first come first serve. There will be plates for vegans and vegetarians alike. Please come early and hang out.

The interior space is pretty wacky -- filled to the brim with colorful artifacts and artsy stuff.

Live Jazz: Who Knew?

Turns out there's live jazz in our 'hood regularly! I've been meaning to check out Parlour Jazz on Vanderbilt since moving to the neighborhood, but never have. Apparently, the jazz club is housed in a brick townhouse between Myrtle and Park. Parlor Jazz 718-855-1981 www.parlorjazz.com

The website takes me back to 1996, but I'm definitely going to make checking this out a priority

I've also seen web mention of something called Jazz 966, which seems to happen at 966 Fulton. This also may or may not be an old folks home? Jazz 966 718-638-6910

Finally, it appears that this renovated space, called LOX, next to Kush on Fulton is slated to be a new jazz club!

If it opens while I'm away, I expect a FULL report.

Friday, July 20, Philadelphia-based artist Andrew Newbold's solo exhibition opens in the Robert Lehman Gallery at UrbanGlass. The glass and metal sculpture and site-specific installation reflect the artist's interpretation of his own experience with industry, specifically glass production, and embrace the manufactured landscape of such industrial spaces. Newbold describes the glass factory as a place filled with interesting systems, varieties of containers, vessels, and objects with individual personality, character, and function. As a fabricator of functional metal forms and as an artist, Newbold observes a symbiotic relationship between the workplace and studio environments.

For works such as The Stack, Newbold assembles simple forms with primary building processes in repetition, thereby imbuing the objects with new life and identity. In Glass Containers, bent glass and formed metal cones are combined to create a composition that evokes a precarious balancing act. By integrating sculptural objects with their surroundings, the artist dissolves the separation between the gallery and the object, creating atmosphere and experience.

A graduate of the Columbus College of Art and Design, Andrew Newbold received his MFA from the Tyler School of Art, Temple University in 2005.  Awarded the Creative Glass Center of America Fellowship in 2006 and a 1998 Glass Art Society Conference scholarship, he has exhibited widely throughout the eastern United States . Newbold's work was included in UrbanGlass' juried 2005 MFA Exhibition. As the winner of that group show competition, he earned the opportunity to mount this solo exhibition at UrbanGlass. Newbold is currently an adjunct assistant professor at the Tyler School of Art and continues to work in metal fabrication.

Following the opening reception for Object and Atmosphere , UrbanGlass hosts a Rock the Hot Shop event from 9:00 pm to midnight. Mighty Redeemer Sound spins records throughout the evening. $15 admission also includes Blue Point Brewing Company beer and white wine sangria all night and a blown glass cup for the first 100 to arrive. The event, which raises funds for the UrbanGlass Education program, is sponsored by Blue Point Brewing Company of Long Island.

St. James Block Association Block Party

News from local artist Ellie Balk, who will be coordinating another community mural at the St. James Block Party: I'm hoping we can get some people out to show support, eat some hot dogs and dance like we do it in in Brooklyn.

The Block Party is scheduled for July 14th, with a rain date of July 21st. I will set up around 10 and paint until we are done painting. This mural painting event is for EVERYONE...the young, the old, the creatively challenged...

I am seeking donations of latex paint and brushes in addition to the donations from Sisters Hardware.

The mural will be happening at the end of the block on St. James at the corner of Gates ave.

Henzel lives and breathes his work, combining the city streets for discarded relics and reinstating their lost grandeur into "a hopeful apocalypse."

Otherworldly Variations

Paintings and Wall Sculptures by Lawrence Heintjes

The Director of L & M Studio, a local design workshop, Larry Heintjes and his artist wife, Mary Rieser, produced the stained glass sign in Tillie’s window when the store first opened ten years ago. A skilled carpenter, master mold and cabinetmaker and art restorer/fabricator, Larry coordinates all aspects of design, construction and installation for museums, architects, contractors and galleries.

Whether he’s working in plastic, wood, oil paints, or gouache, Larry’s private artistic landscape accommodates eclectic nuances achieving fantastic metaphors and shades of meaning. Inspired by biomorphic forms in many manifestations, his work is a jumping-off point for a curious mind and a frequently surrealistic imagination. The pieces are rich in detail yet mysterious enough to confound and to instigate further inquiry.

Heintjes was educated at Pratt Institute and still lives in Fort Greene with his wife and two daughters. His art installation clients include the Holly Solomon Gallery, Chase Manhattan, and the Whitney Museum. He has exhibited widely in New York at galleries such as BACA Downtown in Brooklyn and the 80 Washington Square East Gallery in Greenwich Village.

He has also lectured on mold making for artists, paper casting, and related subjects at Pratt Institute, the Brooklyn Museum, and Connecticut College in New London. Check out their website at www.LMStudio265.com.

The evening begins with an interactive class led by food educators Elizabeth J.E. Johnson & Ludie R Minaya from Green Gourmet. Through tasting and journaling guests explore the five flavors and realize the connection between taste and health. Diners learn that balancing the five flavors is the secret to creating delicious meals and to maintaining health and vitality.
