This email just in from Fort Greene PUPS, re: this weekend's Great PUPkin Contest:

Hello PUPS,We are hoping for a rain-free Saturday afternoon for the 8th Annual Great PUPkin in Fort Greene Park, but rain looks pretty likely.

If there is rain, we will move the contest to Sunday, Oct. 29th, same time and place. Registration begins at 11:30 am, judging starts at noon. Don't forget to move your clocks back an hour on Saturday night! Please pass the word along and come out for the fun and prizes (we have AMAZING prizes this year).

The Fort Greene Conservancy plans to make a decision on whether or not to hold their Halloween Festival at 12 noon on Saturday. If there is rain, they will not reschedule to Sunday.

After a minor delay, the owner of 67 Burger plans on opening sometime this week for friends and family! Hopefully the official opening won't be far off. Jay and I met a friend of the owner at Mullanes last week, who gave us a heads up on some of the menu items.

Sounds like they're giving a real shout-out to the midwest, and will be serving soda pop like A&W Rootbeer and RC Cola.

October in the Hill

Mmmm...it's my favorite month! And there's so much to do for Halloween! Yes, I know it's early, but Halloweenophiles like myself might want to plan ahead. 1. Halloween Party @ Repop 68 Washington Ave. (bt Park and Flushing) -- for the adults No date scheduled yet, but rumor has it it'll be around October 27. What better way to celebrate than with superfun local shop owners Russell and Carl, among their collection of vintage wares, both beautiful and unique, and occasionally creepy. Haven't been in yet? 2. The Great PUPkin October 28, Fort Greene Park: registration begins at 11:30 Who doesn't like to see a dog in a funny costume? The eighth annual doggie costume contest is slated to be serious business. People go all out for this competition, and the prizes are great. Look for "celebrity" judges as well, such as newscasters and political figures. Also, the PUPS calendar, featuring local pets and benefitting the poop bag dispensers in the park, will be available for purchase!

If you've lived in the neighborhood for more than a year, you're well aware of the amazing spectacle produced at the gorgeous white mansion on Clinton Avenue. Owners Janna Kennedy and Randall Hyten create a decorative theme each year and go all out. Two years ago, they ever hired actors to perform scenes on the lawn! The NY Times did a feature on them last year, exploring their history in the neighborhood and their love (obsession?) with Halloween. Read it here!

Mullane's Bar and Grill: The Review

I'm a pretty decent Sports fan. So when Mullane's first posted a sign with "Watch the World Cup Here" I wasn't as upset as some people that a Sports bar was opening up around the Nabe.I was actually kind of happy.There really isn't any place in the Nabe that I know of to where I can watch the game, get a beer and get a bite to eat.I had high hopes for Mullane's to become that place so when it opened you just knew I had to go and check it out with this criteria in mind.

Watching the Game

The decor is nice inside Mullane's. They've got 4 HDTVs and it's high enough that you can get a pretty good view of the game from any place near the bar. What I didn't like is that, as you will see in the pictures, they weren't always broadcasting in HD.Those gray bars are really really annoying don't you think?
If you have HDTV's then you should be broadcasting the game in HD otherwise it's a waste.
Nice high ceilings and a dining room separate from the bar.

One of the nice touches is a separate dining area so people can still go there for dinner and avoid the Sports bar scene.

So as a place to watch the game, it's not so bad. You'll get a good view from anywhere around the bar and I'm sure they'll get it together eventually and put the games on in HD.

Getting a Beer
A decent selection of tap beers.

As with any decent bar they offer a good selection of beers on tap. Magic Hat #9 isn't something that you find in a lot of bars. The Blue Point is also a very good beer that not a lot of places have on tap.

I was quite impressed by the selection.

Getting a Bite to Eat

I know that Mullane's might not be a Sports bar but I think because of the "Watch the World Cup Here" sign and the HDTVs - it left me with that impression.And, again, I'm looking for a place where I can watch the game, get a beer and get a bite to eat.So, in traditional Sports bar manner, I'm expecting really really good BAR FOOD.We start with the Onion Rings.The Onion Rings were missing...something. It was kind of bland. I mean, I should like it. It's fried after all but...no. Maybe more seasoning in the batter and stronger onions would help but these were boring.

We move on to the Buffalo Wings.Any decent Sports bar has to have really good wings. It'll make or break a place, for me, if I can't get good wings while watching the game.Mullane's wings were...different.While the Wings were kind of tasty I wanted traditional Buffalo Wings. Hot sauce and butter. And the hotter the sauce the better so that I can wash it down with beer.These were kind of gourmet wings. And I think they were grilled, not fried. WTF??

There also weren't very many of them. I'm counting like, maybe, a half a dozen in the picture?

Maybe it's me but when I want wings I want to be able to, if need be, make a meal out of it. You'd have to get like 10 orders of Wings here to make it a meal.

What are Mussels doing in a Sports bar?Well, okay, this is the whole "maybe it's not really a Sports bar" thing but I like Mussels. I had to order them. Just because.
Does it go with Onion Rings? Does it go with Buffalo Wings? No, not really but, hey, food is food.But does Mussels go with Chick Peas? NO. THEY DO NOT.

So why are there Chick Peas in with the Mussels?

And the last staple of good ol'Bar Food is the classic American Burger.

And, no, I didn't eat them all.(I'm good but I'm not that good.)I was the proud owner of burger 3 - mushrooms and bacon. It was either the BAM burger or the LaFu burger or something like that.As burgers go - these were good. Not the best I've ever had, not the worse. It was...just a burger. That's probably the best way I can explain it - it was just a burger.

The Final Verdict

I really wanted to like Mullane's. I really wanted it to be that place - especially since the Mets made the playoffs.(Let's Go Mets!)I just wasn't impressed by the food.TV: Check. Beer: Check. Food: Eh.And the food really matters. The Wings were a really big disappointment to me.

Still, you might catch me in there from time to time.

I'm just probably going to have to eat before I go.

LaFu - is short and sweet. TriFuLa - the triangle between Fulton and Lafayette is what Mr. Set Speed wants to call it. TriLaFu - adding the Tri to LaFu to gives it that TriBeCa feel and I can still claim ownership. (Which is important for royalty reasons once the realtors pick up on it.)

An Exciting Surprise

After BklnJay wrote about LaFu, I decided I needed to check it out for myself. When I first moved to CH, I spent quite a lot of time around that corner. It didn't hurt that I had friends who lived across from Moe's, and CH wasn't home to quite as much as it is today. However, in the last year I've been down there less and less. So I was surprised to see all the new stuff with my own eyes!

It seems that only male bloggers have mentioned the new Stuart & Wright boutique in Fort Greene, which led me to believe that it only carried men's apparel. But NO! I peeked inside, and definitely saw lots of lady-tops, high boots and peep-toe shoes!

SWOON! I love that they kept the old sign up outside.

And now for Mullanes. Well... I like the outside design a lot. The inside looks like... any Murray Hill pub. Here's the menu and the hours:

I do like that they're serving food. How many times have you been at Rope and gotten superdrunk because you haven't eaten dinner first? Um, OK, maybe just me (and a few other readers -- you know who you are).

On the OTHER side of the LaFu intersection, next to Academy, is THIS:

This looks cool. The exterior kind of reminds me of HK, in my former neighborhood.

I still haven't tried Le Bagel Delight. They're soooo witty!

At first, I assumed S&W was in the former cleaners closer to CH at Cumberland and Lafayette.

But no. Instead, there's a 7-11 moving in there!!!

Not sure how I feel about this. I'm sure it will be cleaner and bigger than any bodega in the area, and probably less smelly and stocked with more practical stuff (ie it won't have that entire aisle dedicated to those religious candles).

Looks like I'm spending my weekend in LaFu.

Happenings Down In LaFu

I was walking along Lafayette Avenue last night and saw that Mullany's Pub* was now opened for business. A quick peek inside saw 2 flatscreens above the bar broadcasting the Sunday Night NFL game and a pretty mixed crowd inside. Looks like it's off to a good start. I also saw that Stuart & Wright* has also opened for business. Some really nice stuff from what I could see but I didn't stop in.

I also noticed that the outside of Smoke Joint* has been upgraded. Could construction almost be done? Is real BBQ finally coming to Fort Greene?

Oh, and I decided that little area needed it's own special nickname since it's got so much stuff going on around it. I've decided on LaFu since it's where Lafayette Avenue and Fulton Avenue meet up.

(No laughing unless you can think up something better.)

Free Fitness Classes in Ft. Greene Park

I saw this posted up on the Brooklynian's Fort Greene/Clinton Hill/Bed-Stuy Forum.

Hi, I'm a personal trainer/fitness instructor and I'll be moving to Clinton Hill very soon. I'm really excited about the move and have decided to start boot camp classes in Fort Greene Park. I'm offering free classes this Saturday the 9th and next Saturday the 16th for all that are interested in getting into shape in an outdoor setting.

I'm not sure if this is a classifieds ad or not, but this is really specific to the area so I mainly want to reach all of you. I am holding a mommy boot camp class for moms and their babies from 10-11am, and then a general adult group fitness class from 11-12noon.

I've been leading these classes in Williamsburg for many years and am thrilled to be able to bring some outdoor fitness fun to this area. I would love to continue offering free classes on Saturdays as long as the response is high, so do come and check it out!

CHB Meets PIG

Thanks to all on sharing your personal stories on the neighborhood pig! We finally established contact with the owners, Jason and Kelli, and were able to see it with our own eyes.

Kelli answered some questions for us:

1. So, what is PIG's name? PIG's actual name is Emmett. We did not give him that name until we had decided to keep him which was after he had lived with us for about three months. In an effort to not form any real attachment, we had been calling him by Pig or Little Pig. In the end, he answers to anything with Pig in it, thus PIG, a fast bastardization of Little Pig, Piggers, and so on.

2. How long have you had him? How did you come to own a pig? Pig has had us for nine years now, being 4-5 months old when we acquired him, makes him approx. 9 1/2 years of age. I found him in the gutter of a four-lane busy street in the center of the city on a November evening, city being Louisville, KY. After stopping and discovering what I was seeing was in fact a tiny little black pig, the only thing to do was take him home. We tried to find a home or a rescue for him, already having two large dogs and not being in the market for a pig at the moment, but the rescues were full or flat out nasty to us and he was returned to us by the family who thought they wanted him. At that point Jason decided he was going to commit to taking on Pig as his own.

3. Did you know how big he would get? We had no idea how big he would be, only that because of his tail and his ears, according to our vet, he definitely is a miniature pot-bellied pig. He is not really a big boy. He is 19 inches tall and 36 inches long, exactly. So he is about the size of a large lab, with a pot-belly and chubby cheeks of course, that has super short legs.

4. Do you take Emmett to the vet? Does he have any special health needs? Yes, PIG goes to the vet. He is seen by Dr. Lischin at Hope, here in Brooklyn in conjunction with Dr. Gagnon in Louisville. He goes to Louisville to have his tusks cut once or twice a year. Reason being, we not only adore Dr. Gagnon, but the procedure in Louisville is 1/5 the cost of what it is in New York. Both of his vets normally do not see pigs, so we are more than grateful that they are dedicated enough to help him and us, so, if there is any major problem we take him to Cornell Animal Hospital in Ithaca where there are pig specialists.

5. How long do you expect him to live? We are by no means pig experts, but what we have read is 15-20 years.

6. Does he know his name? Does he come when called? Absolutely, he responds to a wide variety of words. And yes, he comes when called unless he is perturbed then he purposely turns his back to us refusing to acknowledge we are speaking to him.

7. Does he play with toys or do tricks? He used to play with toys, but now he mainly likes to nose my shoes around the apartment. Pig games are a little different than dog games. He is very fond of pushing around a plastic 2-liter bottle with small holes in it to release kibble, but it has to have larger more noisy objects in there as well.

8. Is he affectionate? Does he crave being petted and cuddled? PIG is extremely affectionate. He loves to snuggle and spoon, as well as being petted. Being petted by people on the street is one of his favorite things.

9. Does he ever go off-leash in Ft. Greene Park? No. He does occasionally go to the Farmers' Market on Saturdays for apples and then spend a little time at the park, but not off leash. This is not because he would go anywhere or do anything bad or destructive, it is because I am protective of him. I stay pretty close. Also, they sometimes spray the grass in the park and it is really hard to keep PIG from eating it.

10. What does he eat, and how much? His diet consists of a miniature pig kibble, 1 1/4 cup in the evening, and a mango or apple in the morning. On the corner of Dekalb is a place where they sell coconuts, sugarcane, and mangos. They are very kind to PIG and give him the mangos when they are not quite pretty enough to sell. He is pretty spoiled.

11. Are there special pig harnasses, or do you use a dog harnass? I do not know if there are harnesses just for pigs. Dog harnesses have always worked fine for us, although not all of them fit properly.

12. How much exercise does he need? Can he navigate stairs easily? He is supposed to walk around the block at least once a day. He prefers to lie on the sidewalk, sunbathe, and be with his favorite neighbors. We do take him out twice a day to go to the bathroom but he stays out usually for about an hour or so socializing.

13. How do your neighbors feel about Piggers? Everyone seems to really like him. He is kind of a showboat and wants to greet everyone who passes. So often we here, "He has really made my day." or "Now I have seen eveything." I could count on one hand the number of negative reactions and they are always fear of the unfamiliar.

14. How long have you lived in the neighborhood? What brought you here? We first moved to Fort Greene in 1999. Then spent sometime in Seattle while I was in Grad school, but returned to Brooklyn in 2002. Originally, we moved here because of a job I acquired.

15. What's your favorite place to eat here? And does Piggers sit outside if you eat at an outside table? Jason is partial to the garden at Castro's. Red Bamboo, on Dekalb, is also a nice atmosphere. I have been a vegetarian since I was 19, and Jason became one after ordering a pepperoni pizza one night shortly after finding PIG, and felt unable to reconcile consuming pork while living with a pig. Pig likes to hang out in front of Tillie's, on Dekalb, while we have coffee. We rarely take him to restaurants, but when I have he justs sits by my feet.

16. What do you both do for a living? What do you do with PIG when you go out of town? Jason is a musician and I am finishing my Masters in architecture. When we go out of town we almost always take him with us. If he is unable to go we take him to a friend's kennel, which he loves because of all the barking. Growing up with dogs and having never been around another pig since we have had him, PIG thinks he is just like them.

17. Does PIG like being out in the rain and snow? No! To our chagrin, he despises the rain. Snow is a little different, very fun to eat but cold on the trotters.

18. Does PIG like car rides? Pig does ride in the car alot. Spends his time with his head between the seats or sound asleep, and usually seems to like it.

Stuff we learned when we met PIG in "person:"

  • He is always "talking," creating a variety of grunts and squeaks
  • Pig poop is like giant rabbit poop
  • His "fur" is very bristly and stiff
  • He is superstrong!

Pilates on South Portland

It seems as though a new pilates studio has opened on South Portland between Lafayette and Fulton. It's in the small space the hippie-esque bookstore occupied for a very short time. The flyers say the studio opened on September 1. However, I walked by that very day and it didn't seem ready to host classes. Seemed a bit dusty and undergoing the finishing touches.

Pookiellama Report: Local Sauce

Perhaps you've noticed the bearded man sitting at the northern end ofthe Fort Greene Farmer's Market, a respectful distance from the "legal" merchants, these past two Saturdays. Perhaps, like me, you at first didn't wander over to see what he was hawking in case it was, say, a self-published novel or something equally scary. But hopefully curiosity (or, in my case, a curious husband) won out, and you walked over. Cause if you didn't, you missed out on this:

Homemade, limited-edition, organic hot sauce, brewed right under our noses on Hall Street by local artist Matt Miller.

Matt moved to Clinton Hill in August 2000, to attend grad school at Pratt, and has been making hot sauce for the past three summers from peppers that he grows himself. He began with a small batch of only 94 bottles - made with peppers grown from seeds from "crappy Associated scotch bonnet peppers" - which he gave to family and friends and sold at work. He now makes two or three different small batches a year. Starting with a "general idea of the basics of how a hot sauce is made", he trawled web sites to see what other hot sauce brewers were up to, and eventually settled on his own formula. He wanted his sauce to be "natural, and made with high-quality ingredients". Matt, who names El Yucateo and Cholula as among his favorite commercial hot sauces, works mainly on his own, aided and supported by his girlfriend, family, friends, and "a team of Oompa Loompas (for Packaging and Quality Control)."

To come up with a name and logo for his creation, Matt explains, "First I thought of the hottest object in the universe, and then translated it into Flanders-speak. Next I photographed a sculpture I made from some peppers I grew, to get the logo. I guess I wanted people to get a chuckle out of the packaging too."

Matt had two varieties of hot sauce for sale the weekend that I ran into him at the Market. One was lighter, with a citrus flavor, and one was smokier and a bit spicier. Both are excellent - they have tons of flavor, not just heat. Devil's Doodad will keep for up to a year in the fridge.

Will the Devil's Doodad empire expand? Matt says it mainly depends on how his pepper crop does each year. At this point he only sells his sauce at the Fort Greene Farmer's Market and at his job, and doesn't turn a profit, though he breaks even.

Fort Greene Stuff

Damn, there's a lot going on in this vicinity!! Over in the western corner of Fort Greene, SetSpeed reports on the turtle-esque progress of a new BBQ joint (opening where the Cambodian place used to be), as well as the irish pub slated to open next to Le Bagel Delight. This place was advertising broadcasting World Cup games, and it's STILL not open. Maybe they meant the 2008 World Cup? He ponders whether the pub points to the Murray Hill-ification of the 'hood. God, I hope not. I wonder how this'll fit in with the neighbors, and Moe's. The BBQ place definitely seems like a good choice for the area.

Both Clintoncentric and Brooklyn Record have clued us in on the former Italian restaurant on DeKalb that's been undergoing renovations. It's slated to be... Bonita! YESSSSSS. I do admit to the area already having some stellar Mexican (Pequena, Los Pollitos), but Bonita will be significantly closer to me than the other two. Depending on the quality of the guac, it might be tacked on to my list of regular dining options. (FYI, the original is in Williamsburg.)

My bad -- the pub and BBQ are both on South Elliott near Lafayette. Bonita is on DeKalb across from iCi.

Urban Spring Springs into Business!

now open!I know this is firmly placed in Fort Greene, but for those of us who head to the park regularly (especially with dogs!), this place is RIGHT on the way, and has been slated to open for months. I think it'll provide a nice alternative to iced coffee.

Inside, the space is small but adorable. Props on the design choice for the ceiling lights!

Staff seems supremely friendly and welcoming, which seems fitting for an organic juice establishment.

I stopped in this morning on my way home from the park with Mallow...

The owners, a husband (Gordon) and wife team, returned to Brooklyn after stints in Afghanistan (he working on Presidential elections and she in drug control). Finding it difficult to go back to 9-to-5 jobs, they decided to go into business for themselves. At first, they concentrated on green building, but when a storefront around the corner from them became available in April, they jumped at it.

They didn't want to be "just another coffee shop," and decided to focus on healthy juices and food.

I tried the avocado-banana smoothie in a bowl with granola (bowls are partially made from sugarcane and are fully biodegradable). I'm not normally into granola, but whatever they used was completely delish. The only drawback? It set me back $7.04. Totally worth $5, but $7 seemed a bit steep.

Then again, the high-ish prices may help pay for organic-natural products and supplies.

I had a chance to go into Urban Spring this morning and they must've had a busy opening weekend! Lots of items on the menu weren't currently available. Don't worry -- as I was leaving a delivery of fresh ingredients was being made.

I got the Acai smoothie which was very tasty.

And Robin's right, the lights are super cool.

The Swine of the Hill

Last summer, a friend staying with me for part of the summer called me frantically while I was at work.

"Um, I think I just saw a pig? On a leash? Being walked like a dog? Outside your building?"

He asked, rather than told, in case he may have been hallucinating. That was the first I'd heard of the pig.

Since then, I've heard a few more reports. Recently, a neighbor and friend of mine caught pig and owner in the street and snapped the above picture.

At this point, the pig seems like the Loch Ness Monster -- more legend than anything else. Then again, the photographic evidence speaks well for its existence. I'd like to see the neighborhood pig with my own eyes.

Here are some of the rumors I have heard:

  • Pig and owners live near the FG/CH border
  • Pig owner is in the band Fiery Furnaces

Then, there's this article - how have I never seen this?

Any of you ever seen, petted or played with the neighborhood pig? Can the pig go off-leash in Fort Greene Park? What is the pig's name? Does it come when called?

URBAN SPRING: UPDATE!

Yesterday afternoon, I walked past Urban Spring and peeked into the window, behind the newspapers hung there. I saw a counter, shelving and cute overhead lights! YES! THEN, this morning, I noticed the window paper had been removed! A tall blonde guy was in the store and I gave him a wave. On my way back from the park, I ran into him outside.

Inspection is TODAY. As long as they get the "OK," they're going to practice during the week and may be open as early as SATURDAY!

It's funny how new storefront openings in our neighborhood attract the kind of frenzy that a boy band in-store appearance might have in the midwest. In the park, my neighbor and I shared stories of anxious waiting - me for Sushi D and he for Choice Market. New stuff in Clinton Hill is kind of like a drug.
