Help Raise Money for PS11

A friend of mine recently sent me a few different links detailing ways to give financial help to PS11, located on Waverly and Greene. Personally, I liked this little dog t-shirt: ps11.jpg

I've heard some good things about local families investing time and energy into the school community here to help make it a better place.

More details can be found on the PS11 website.

Along with children's and maternity clothing, toys and gear we will offer a wide array of kids' classes such as Sign-a-Song, Musica Para Mi, Private Picassos, Let's Dance Brooklyn!, Lego Mindstorm, and more. St. James Block Association Block Party

News from local artist Ellie Balk, who will be coordinating another community mural at the St. James Block Party: I'm hoping we can get some people out to show support, eat some hot dogs and dance like we do it in in Brooklyn.

The Block Party is scheduled for July 14th, with a rain date of July 21st. I will set up around 10 and paint until we are done painting. This mural painting event is for EVERYONE...the young, the old, the creatively challenged...

I am seeking donations of latex paint and brushes in addition to the donations from Sisters Hardware.

The mural will be happening at the end of the block on St. James at the corner of Gates ave.

Check it out and report back!

new store on grand

the old karrot space on grand between lafayette and clifton, which has sat so maddeningly empty for so long, is finally getting a new life! sometime this summer it will become the permanent home of still hip, the kids' resale shop that we've mentioned a couple of times here on chb. they hope to have things up and running this month, so keep your eyes peeled. ps - i know that we got scooped by brownstoner on this! grrr.

Community Gardens

Summer's more or less upon us, and many of us do not have our own yards or gardens. What to do? Find a community garden! Before I lived in CH, I spent two years in Hell's Kitchen. One of my favorite things in the neighborhood was the Clinton Community Garden. Residents just needed to show up on the appointed day with a utility bill and a small deposit and would get a key to the garden to enter at any time. Individual plots were also available for those looking to grow veggies or flowers.

It's taken me awhile to seek out the community gardens in our area, mainly because there are so many and because a lot of the info I found online is incorrect. I recently spent a sweaty Sunday hoofing around the hood to see what was available. I checked much of Fort Greene and Clinton Hill to just past Classon. I've coordinated with BedStuy Blog, who will be posting the Bed-Stuy gardens today as well.

Their efforts have not gone unrecognized- the class was featured in a Daily News article in March. The children have learned about community gardening through a cross- disciplinary approach. They have used math skills to measure and record the temperature in the garden, they have learned about city government through their campaign to save the garden, they have used their writing skills to write letters to their elected officials, and they have planned many science experiments to start this growing season. After the news about the May auction, the children from both schools wrote letters to City Council member Mary Pinkett and the mayor on behalf of their garden, attended the public hearings, and decorated the garden’s fence with ribbons and signs. Three classes from P.S. 11 are planning and designing their garden plot for this season. A second grade class from P.S. 287 have planned an experiment to study the effects of the sun on plant growth. For their experiment the class plans to grow the same plants at two different community gardens one with full sun and one with shade. The gardens they plan to use for the experiment are the Hollenback garden and the Children’s Garden (2099/43). The garden was started in 1980. individual plots

EARTHDRIVER 7:30 Doors Paul Robeson Tribute Set Earthdriver is a high powered New York City based mothership comprised of some of the hottest musicians on the scene. From this diverse collective comes an intense hybrid of funk, rock, soul, hip-hop, drum & bass, world music, and experimental genres. Beginning as an organic meeting ground where musicians of all backgrounds were free to explore their own creativity, what has resulted is an uncensored explosion of art and music overflowing with the liberating spirit of 'harmonious subjectivity'. Since Earthdriver is just as much a movement as it is a band, there is a common understanding of the importance of free thinking and creativity to the larger struggle in the United States and to peoples' movements around the world. Admission $12 // www.myspace.com/earthdriver

ESSIE JAIN & Friends 10pm Doors "Essie Jain is a totally new voice. Her debut album, We Made This Ourselves, manages to impress on the strength of its maturity first and foremost. The arrangements are extremely minimal, utilizing piano, slide guitar, and strings to create a stark sound as coherent as it is fragile. The same can be said of the lyrics, which eschew whimsy in favor of life experience every time." Artist Direct: February 2007 Admission $10 // www.essiejain.com

JOLLYSHIP THE WHIZ-BANG'S "CRABQUISTADOR" 7:30 Doors Brooklyn¹s nautical rock wunderkind Jollyship the Whiz-Bang is a puppet troupe, rock band, and theater production company. They have performed in festivals worldwide, invited on the renown of their legendary live shows, which incorporate music, puppetry, video and comedy in elaborate spectacles.

Fresh from their Galapagos run of Little Building, Jollyship the Whiz-Bang presents a rewritten version of Crabquistador, their seminal 2005 puppet rock opera. Featuring a five piece rock band, sword fighting puppets, powerpoint presentations, video projected backgrounds, fire, brimstone, and eight original songs, Crabquistador is a Christian puppet show like you've never seen before - hilarious, edgy, & relentless! Admission $15 // www.thewhizbang.org

BURNT SUGAR & LANDAU ORCHESTRA 7:30 Doors Burnt Sugar, described by the Village Voice as "electric Miles with soul, Maggot Brain with a PHD, the Hendrix Evans band of dreams, the underwater funk some hear in A.R. Kane," was conceived as the contemporary version of the Miles Davis Bitches Brew Band, exploring the connecting tissue binding jazz, rock, funk, twentieth century composition, and African music in a lyrical, improvisational manner.

The Landau Orchestra combines acoustic brass, piano, strings, wind instruments and electronics to recreate a melodic mix of jazz, classical music and modern electronic production. Admission $12 // www.burntsugarindex.com www.netlandau.com

*** APRIL 13***

OLDE ENGLISH COMEDY TROUPE 7:30 Doors In four years of performing, they have produced over a hundred short videos, and have performed at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, the Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival, and the San Francisco Sketchfest. Their work has been featured on Good Morning America, MSNBC, and Entertainment Weekly's "Must List." Olde English is Caleb Bark, Ben Popik, David Segal, Adam Conover, and Raphael Bob-Waksberg. Admission $7 // Sponsored by Re: Up Magazine www.oldeenglish.org

SUN RA ARKESTRA & NUBLU ORCHESTRA CONDUCTED BY BUTCH MORRIS 10pm Doors From its inception, Sun Ra Arkestra's music was infused with Sun Ra's unique philosophy, an unexpected hybrid of space-age science fiction and ancient Egyptian cosmo religious trappings. This philosophy gained a visual manifestation in the colorful robes, mock-metallic capes, and space headgear worn by the band (it's the only jazz orchestra that brings a tailor on tour), and in a stage presentation that usually features several dancers, a number of group chants ("We travel the spaceways/From planet to planet"), and at least one instance of the entire band juking its way, single-file, through the audience.

"Nublu Orchestra is made up of, but not limited to, musicians from many different camps: jazz, funk, pop, fusion, Brazilian, R&B, classical, but the music we make is none of these... If Nublu means anything it means "inclusive nature" (rather than exclusive). It means we will find the center of balance and cosmology no matter whom is in the band, Nublu reflects the music and the music reflects Nublu. It's a total encounter in the moment." -Butch Morris The Nublu Orchestra¹s music is an amalgamation of sounds from free jazz to techno just as the club and label¹s sound as a whole is the same. www.elrarecords.com www.myspace.com/nubluorchestra Admission $15 Advanced/ $20 at door

***APRIL 14th *** Family Show!!! ALEX & THE KALEIDOSCOPE BAND 1pm Doors Alex & the Kaleidoscope Band offer lively and engaging musical concerts for children. Concerts are based on music from the award winning CD series Kaleidoscope Songs. Alex Mitnick and his five-piece band bring children and adults together on a fantastic musical journey. Audiences sing along, clap, dance and participate in spontaneous musical improvisations with the band. "It was an hour of music from the heart, for the heart," Sharon Orlando, Youth Services Librarian. Alex sings and plays guitar and is joined by Natalie Merritt singing and dancing, Sean Dixon on bass, Sebastian Guerrero on drum set and Jon Thompson playing the sax and electric guitar. Admission $12 // www.kaleidoscopesongs.com

EL MICHELS AFFAIR and BUDOS BAND 10pm Doors The sound of El Michel's Affair, a seven member instrumental ensemble is described as a set of "cinematic soul, vampy numbers with quick changes in tempo and mood." Opening for the likes of Mos Def and playing regularly as the back up band for Raekwon, the members of this Brooklyn based ensemble are also the founders of Truth & Soul Records. They carry an easygoing style that's as much 70s jazz as it is 60s funk, tunes that allow more room for instrumental interplay, unusual rhythm and instrumental flair, echoing the 70's soundtracks, Latin albums and funky 45s that sparked the initial inspiration.

The Budos Band has erupted onto the Funk and Soul scene with a malicious sound that all but commands you to burn down the dance floor. This eleven piece group offers up nasty cuts of cosmic afro-influenced psychedelic funk that haunt your head long after the music stops. Admission $12 adv/ $15 Day of Show

**Advanced tickets can be purchased at TicketWeb and at Halcyon: 57 Pearl St. at the corner of Water & Pearl Sts. in Dumbo, Brooklyn

Tennis Alternative

The courts in Fort Greene Park are usually packed on summer days, but I've discovered a small hidden gem on Cumberland just south of Fulton, in that development of modern-ish townhouses! There are two tennis courts tucked in there, as well as a small but very green and well-kept park.dscf0168.jpg

dscf0169.jpg

This is such an odd little area (nice, but seems isolated).

Anyway, in case you want to play some tennis today...

hip kids (and moms)

got kids? know somebody who's got kids? or expecting a kid? you should check out still hip, a just-getting-off-the-ground local kids-and-maternity resale shop run by two local mothers. they're still running presale events out of marcie's house for now, so you have to go their website and fill out an invite form to get the location info. but it takes all of two seconds, and then you get to go check out all of the great merch they have. we went last week and made out with a whole summer wardrobe for $20.... sunday, march 25th 11pm-5pm stillhipbrooklyn.com

lafu lunch

brooklyn jay handed me the assignment of reviewing 67 burger (67 lafayette @ fulton, next to corcoran), since it is currently only open till 4pm, and he works a day job, whereas i lead the leisurely life of a stay-at-home-mom. so we headed over around noon today, and were greeted by this:

cimg3808.jpg

boo! but we were also greeted by the very nice manager whose name i can't remember (ed? sorry!), who explained the follwoing to us: the noon–4pm hours had been their soft opening, and they had found a few things that they wanted to tweak before they opened for real. they are very happy with the quality of the food, but less pleased with how service was flowing. they're paying special attention to this aspect since they know that there has been some talk lately about the low quality of service in local restaurants (ahem!). so they are switching over from waitstaff service to counter service only, which i agree makes a lot more sense for the kind of place that 67 burger seems to be. they should be open again tomorrow or friday at the latest, and we will return....

but in the meantime we had to eat lunch, and i was determined to review something, dammit, so we hoofed up the street to la bagel delight (73 lafayette, next to mullane's). and all in all, it was...really good. the moms split a grilled chicken with broccoli rabe and fresh mozarella on focaccia:

cimg3810.jpg

the chicken was passably moist, the broccoli rabe wasn't overcooked, and the foccacia was great, flakey yet dense. very happy. the kids split wild rice with grilled vegetables....

cimg3819.jpg

...and pasta salad with mozarella and tomatoes...

cimg3812.jpg

...which was a little too vinegar-y, but i'd rather have too much vinegar than too much oil.

but what pushed this place from "mediocre" to "really good" was the guys behind the counter who, while mindful of the fact that most people in there are on their lunch break and need to get in and out quickly, are just plain sweet. smiling, joking, genuinely nice. they even gave us free cookies for the kids (but don't tell the kids that, since they never saw one little crumb of them, no sugar high before nap, thanks).

and look—if you get a bunch of bagels to take home, they give you a handy carrying case that you can reuse the next time you need to take your cat to the vet!

cimg3821.jpg

my only complaint? lack of a restroom. i know it's mostly a to-go kind of joint, but if you're gonna have tables, you should have a rest room.

Clinton Hill Society's 12th Annual Halloween Walk

Tuesday, October 315:30-6:30 pm Pratt-Clinton Hill Community Garden (corner of DeKalb and Hall)

All costumed Trick-or-Treaters up to age 12 invited! The parade route winds through the neighborhood. Maps to the most generous homes will be provided.

PARENTS: PLEASE ACCOMPANY YOUR CHILD!

Also, be sure to check out a popular carriage house on Waverly between DeKalb and Willoughby -- I'm told the landladies put on quite a show for the kids!

October in the Hill

Mmmm...it's my favorite month! And there's so much to do for Halloween! Yes, I know it's early, but Halloweenophiles like myself might want to plan ahead. 1. Halloween Party @ Repop 68 Washington Ave. (bt Park and Flushing) -- for the adults No date scheduled yet, but rumor has it it'll be around October 27. What better way to celebrate than with superfun local shop owners Russell and Carl, among their collection of vintage wares, both beautiful and unique, and occasionally creepy. Haven't been in yet? Need a costume? Their selection of vintage clothing, jewelry, hats and other miscellany are perfect for dress-up. Head over now, and come back for the party. Details to come...

(RePop)

2. The Great PUPkin October 28, Fort Greene Park: registration begins at 11:30 Who doesn't like to see a dog in a funny costume? The eighth annual doggie costume contest is slated to be serious business. People go all out for this competition, and the prizes are great. Look for "celebrity" judges as well, such as newscasters and political figures. Also, the PUPS calendar, featuring local pets and benefitting the poop bag dispensers in the park, will be available for purchase!

(Marshmallow dressed as a s'more in 2005)

3. Fort Greene Park Conservancy Children's Halloween Festival October 28, Fort Greene Park Hay rides, free pumpkins, face painting and food, for children and parents

4. Decorations on Clinton Avenue (white mansion between DeKalb and Lafayette)

(Halloween 2004)

If you've lived in the neighborhood for more than a year, you're well aware of the amazing spectacle produced at the gorgeous white mansion on Clinton Avenue. Owners Janna Kennedy and Randall Hyten create a decorative theme each year and go all out. Two years ago, they ever hired actors to perform scenes on the lawn! The NY Times did a feature on them last year, exploring their history in the neighborhood and their love (obsession?) with Halloween. Read it here!

(inside the house - taken on the 2005 house tour)

5. Society for Clinton Hill Children's Halloween Walk October 31 A planned trick-or-treating walk for children and parents

Have info on other Halloween events? Send them in and we'll post. PS- would someone please host a pumpkin carving event?
