I checked it out last week. The space is very teeny, but gorgeously designed. The bar was filled with a good cross-section of neighbors, and the wine list was descriptive.
For now, they are giving out free cheese plates but plan to have a more full cheese-meat menu soon.
Fingers crossed that they do well. It's so close to the C train entrance! Very convenient for an after-work glass of wine. I know I need them often.

The new bar is just a few storefronts west of Olivino's Fulton Ave location (between Clinton and Vanderbilt).

Taibi creates mixed media works comprised of a variety of materials, most of which she has rescued from garbage piles and collected over time. Some of the things she collects include plastic "sell by" tags from bread bags and labels from food packaging. in short, the excess of daily consumer life. She is drawn to intense pattern and color and especially enjoys day of the dead shrines and psychedelic poster art of the late 60's/early 70's.
As a teenager Katelan and her cousin took road trips with no destinations. They wound up at truck stops, coffee shops, graveyards and the occasional prison. Through these trips she learned the art of collage. picking up whatever scraps she could find and pasting them into journals. Her first job was an in-house project for Hallmark Inc.
Now, Katelan makes a living pasting and painting for clients such as The Grammy Awards, Out magazine, The Progressive and many others. Her collaged portraits and ruminative mixed-media paintings have graced the pages of Scholastic Books and the walls of Young & Rubicam. Ensemble Studio Theater even had her work grace their stage. Katelan's art can currently be seen at The Ohio History Museum. During the Summer and Fall of 2008 she will be showing in both Harlem and Europe. She also designs and illustrates for Constellation Magazine.
Katelan still takes trips with no destinations and throws the fragments in her journals. In her spare time she reads tarot, practices reiki and poses for pictures.

Compelling performers with growing followings, they appeared recently at Pete’s Candy Store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. In January 2008, the Levee Drivers beat out 300 other bands in the “Best of Philly Rising” competition.

Nadia Merzliakow was born in Paris, France, to Russian émigré parents and lived in Germany for seven years before emigrating to the U.S., where she graduated from Hunter College and then studied at Harvard, Columbia, and New York University. She received a Master of Library and Information Science degree from Pratt Institute, where she was Director of International Students for many years. She is fluent in Russian, French, German, and English.
Currently retired, this longtime resident of Clinton Hill volunteers at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, where she takes classes in watercolor painting. She has exhibited her work there and at the Tinicum Arts Festival in Pennsylvania.
Of this new chapter in her life, she writes: “When I was a child, I liked to paint flowers, and anyone who saw them oohed and aahed – with the exception of my parents. Of Russian nobility, my parents lost everything in the Russian Revolution of 1917 and wanted me to have a stable profession. Moreover, my mother’s sister, a very talented artist, was an eccentric. With horror in their voices, they would look at my work and say, ‘Oh, just like Aunt Olga.’ Though I was always interested in art growing up, and attended museums, I did not paint.
I was at Pratt for over 30 years and never took an art class. My work with the international students was demanding and intense. When I retired ten years ago, I became a volunteer at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and took the free watercolor classes there. Remembering my childhood passion for painting flowers, I looked at the offerings and said, why not? Watercolor has changed my vision of the world, particularly that of flowers. When I look now at flowers, my mind absorbs their colors and shapes through an artistic process.”

She is heartbroken that Polaroid will no longer produce instant film and that Coney Island will be redeveloped after the summer of 2008. RePOP is pleased to announce the March exhibition featuring the fine art of Christine Young. Christine Young creates darkly imaginative, beautifully unusual images of placidly content characters in their imposed worlds. Suspended from chains, submerged underwater, or displayed in dollhouses, her figures are a melding of fairy tale, circus, and punk sensibilities. Her collages are detailed constructions of paper, glue, and charcoal which draw heavily on the creepy and romantic experience of the world. These aspects continually present themselves in her dreamlike images, which draw inspiration from the works of Poe, Bukowski, Tom Waits, Tim Burton, and Jan Svankmajer. Her work has been shown in London, New York, Los Angeles, and New Mexico, and has been represented by the punk-cabaret duo, The Dresden Dolls.

I needed a place to eat that was close by but I wanted someplace new too. I didn't want it to be too fancy either. I just wanted a nice, chill, relaxing place to grab a beer and some decent food. I saw a review of Rustik over on Clinton Hill Foodie which seem to fit the bill perfectly. (yeah, I've been slacking and they got to it before me) After checking out Rustik's very slick website and menu online I decided to give it a shot. I'm so glad I did.
The first thing I noticed was how...out of place Rustik seemed to be in where it's located. It's like bodega, bodega, take out, take out, bodega, Rustik.
Well at least you won't miss it walking by.
I was impressed with Rustik's interior decor. High ceilings and lots of lights, but not overly bright, gave it a very warm and inviting feeling and with that big sofa up front - definitely a place to chill.
First order of business: a beer. Rustik has a very decent selection of tap and bottled beers. (All of which is listed on their website.) I went with the Blue Moon which they had on tap - always an excellent choice.
Second order of business: FOOD.
Every item was named after something local or of significance. For example, the Willoughby Wings for Willoughby Avenue. It's kind of silly but nice at the same time. Adds a very "neighborhood" feel to it.
Prices were extremely reasonable. Lots of items under $10 and nothing over $15.
We decided on the following:
The Nostrand Nachos with the olives and the jalapenos on the side.
As a stand alone dish it's eh. I like the fact that it's cheese sauce rather than real cheese, real cheese has a tendency to clump up and get chewy as it cools, but other than that it was lacking something that made it great. Like...
The Clinton Hill Chili.
Now I know you can add the chili on top of the nachos for $2 but go with a whole order of chili along with the nachos and use the nachos to scoop up all that chili goodness.
The chili, by itself, is still was very good and, while still full of flavor, it was relatively tame and lacked heat and spiciness.
Mixing it with the nachos is really the way to go. It takes two "okay" dishes to 11.
We moved on to a small order of the Willoughby Wings with BBQ sauce. (That's where my olives and jalapenos went!)
I want to point out that these wings are breaded. Normally I hate breaded wings but these I didn't mind. It worked well with the BBQ sauce, giving the sauce something to stick to, as well as adding a bit of crispiness to the chicken.
What surprised me about this dish was that the BBQ sauce was actually spicy and had some heat to it. The heat was unexpected, I had to double check to make sure it was the wings and not the chili, but not overwhelming. It actually worked very well together as a sweet and spicy combination.
Finally, the Franklin Fish and Chips.
This was pretty good. The fish was lightly breaded, not battered, which kept the whole dish relatively "light". The fish was done well and was flaky and moist. The chips on the other hand...eh.
The chips were too big in size and I think that kept them from getting really crispy. The chips also had some old bay seasoning or something on them which was too over powering for the lighter tasting fish. I like the fish...the chips need work.
We wanted to try the Chambord Creme Brulee but they were out of it. (Doesn't it sound good though? Chambord Creme Brulee? Mmmm...)
Overall, it's a great place and I'm definitely going to be back. It's got a nice mellow vibe, serves good food and has good drinks. All at a very reasonable price. The entire meal was about $40. It's like the perfect little local neighborhood spot.
The service was good with the bartender being attentive without "hovering". (And he didn't once ask me if I spoke english! That's a plus right there!)
The one complaint I do have is the TV. There's a pretty big TV right in the middle of the room and when there's a TV on you're sort...of...forced...to...watch...it. I would have like it a lot better if it was off and a good selection of music was playing instead. (They have a very nice sound system.) The TV just seemed out of place and sort of broke up that "chill" feeling if you know what I mean.
Other than that it's a great place and a very welcome addition to the neighborhood.
Oh, and if you're lucky you'll catch a free show.
We were treated to piano renditions of Keane and Coldplay. Very very cool.

On Friday, February 22, 2008 Frank White, the hip Brooklyn cafe/gallery/lounge presents "The Takeover“ Philly Invades Brooklyn a monthly event celebrating Philadelphia music, artists and all things fresh-- made in Philly (i.e. Sly Fox Beer, Tastykake). The event is co-sponsored by two.one.five magazine, a new publication covering the scene in Philly and beyond.
The launch event will be hosted by, Cee Knowledge, a Philadelphia native and former member of the Grammy Award winning hip hop group, Digable Planets and Nikki Jean lead singer for band, Nouveau Riche. An art exhibition will be on display by visual artist Soul One.
Muhammida El Muhajir and William Collick, the co-owners of Frank White are both Philadelphia transplants living in Brooklyn. "Historically, Philadelphia has had a huge impact on music and culture and that continues today," says Collick. "As Philadelphians- we are proud of both our 'Philly-ness' and our 'Brooklyn-ness' that is also shared by so many in the creative community in Brooklyn and New York City at large. It is this duality that will be celebrated at 'The Takeover'™," adds El Muhajir.

Prone to collaborating in the store, on canvas and in life these artists have taken a long overdue sabbatical from conspiring together to present a series of individual works. "Family Matter" is a reflection of those ghosts buried in the closet beckoned out for examination. At times melancholy and other times whimsical, Grauer and Boyle bring the observer into a personal realm of portraiture and surreal interpretation granting permission to laugh at their own trials while taking us on a ride through the depth of them.

Awhile back, the intriguing Paul Robeson Theater on Greene Ave hosted a fun theater series. Starting TONIGHT, the church-turned-theater will be hosting a few nights of experimental music: Wednesday, December 19th Bjorkestra and Sun Ra Arkestra 8pm, $15 door (I just had to post the full info for tonight, because this Bjork thing sounds amazing) BJORKESTRA Blending Bjork's visionary techno pop with the harmonic and improvisational elements of modern jazz, Travis Sullivan has created a truly unique ensemble that transcends genre and style. SUN RA ARKESTRA From its inception, Sun Ra Arkestra's music was infused with Sun Ra's unique philosophy, an unexpected hybrid of space-age science fiction and ancient Egyptian cosmo religious trappings. This philosophy gained a visual manifestation in the colorful robes, mock-metallic capes, and space headgear worn by the band (it's the only jazz orchestra that brings a tailor on tour), and in a stage presentation that usually features several dancers, a number of group chants ("We travel the spaceways/From planet to planet") and at least one instance of the entire band juking its way, single-file, through the audience.

Sandra Rocha's work reveals some quiet, undeclared beauty in the mundane everyday scenery of life, to entice the viewer to contemplate what is otherwise overlooked. Whether a gritty street corner or a distressed chair, she extracts something extraordinary about the subject, emphasizing all of the imperfections and quirks that give it character.
The more recent work of urban scenery is a reaction to urban grit that is so much a part of the character of the city, however subversive and unaccepted. Given the current speed of gentrification and the erection of high-rise gleaming condos throughout the city, Rocha records these gritty pockets in the underbelly of the city.
