Dentist on Fulton?
/I think this is new, as I haven't noticed it before:
OK, I just Googled it and found a bunch of places it's been listed, so maybe it's NOT new. Anyone go here?
And as an aside, does anyone have a good doctor in Brooklyn? Either primary care, lady doctor, specialist, etc? I love my PCP, but am have long grown weary of trekking up to her office on East 90th Street. What do most Brooklynites do?
No Starbucks on Myrtle (Yet)
/Thankfully, the Starbucks rumors were wrong. They will NOT be moving into the storefront on Myrtle across from Kum Kau (at Washington). Instead, NYCPet.com will be moving in.
They already operate two stores in Park Slope and offer delivery and online ordering. Word has it that they will also be offering veterinary services!
We do have a few vets in the area already (at Kiki's on DeKalb and Brooklyn Vet Hospital on Vanderbilt), but anyone who has had to lug an overweight cat to the vet in an unwieldy carrier will surely appreciate the convenience of additional services in the area.
Trees at Clinton + Lafayette
/They set up yesterday, in front of Cadman Church!
Entrepreneur of the Week in CH!
/Congrats to Trishalee of Polish Bar Brooklyn, who was recently named Entrepreneur of the Week by Black Enterprise! Hats off to Tricialee! We love our locally-owned establishments :) (PBB is located at 470 Myrtle bt Washington and Hall.)
A Plea for Shoe Repair
/Received this email from a reader:Does anyone know of a good local place to get my shoes repaired (ex. re-heeled)? I've vowed never to take them back to the shoe guy on Waverly but now have a pile of shoes I can't wear until they are repaired!
I've had mixed experiences myself with the guy on Waverly, so I'm eager to hear about other options.
Tree Lot #1
/Trees and wreaths are now available for sale on Myrtle at Hall. Selection looks decent, and they have a large selection of Charlie Brown-sized trees perfect for studio apartments!
Tree Shopping in the Hill
/It's nearly December, and that means tree shopping! I'm hoping to highlight the places to buy a tree again this year, with more detail than last year. For starters, the tree guy on Clinton and Lafayette (in front of Cadman Memorial Church) will be setting up on Thursday, Dec. 6. I always end up buying from him - always convenient and friendly.
Problems at the CH Library?
/I recently received this email from a reader: Hey there,
I consistently have trouble with the Clinton Hill library branch. I'm not too bothered by the poor customer service, which is on par with out Post Office, but I'm bothered that they don't process my books when I return them. I should try returning one to Clinton Hill and one to the main branch to prove the lapse in time of return.
I usually get a $.50 late charge every time I return it there, but I currently owe $25 on a travel book that I returned in August. I'm curious to know if any other CH residents and blog readers have had any problems.
Personally, I haven't had any problems with them. I enjoy having a library close by, and I often request books online and have them sent for free to the CH branch. The facilities are horribly dated, but otherwise I haven't run into any annoyances. Anyone else had issues there?
(FYI, the library is located at 380 Washington Ave. bt Lafayette and Greene)
Perhaps these problems will be remedied once the library is rebuilt! Brownstoner did a post about it last month here. Though I suspect while they rebuild it'll mean we're without a library.
Clothing Donation in the Hill
/Two separate readers have recently contacted me, lamenting that their usual clothing donation drop boxes have disappeared. (Specifically, the box at Grand and Fulton, and the box on Myrtle near Tamboril.) Where else can one drop a donation? Personally, I bring stuff to the Goodwill on Fulton near Franklin. They take clothing, books, appliances, etc, and they also provide you with a receipt - key for tax season!
Other options include the Salvation Army on Quincy between Downing and Classon (near Broken Angel), and the library on Washington between Greene and Gates - I noticed a clothing donation box at the circulation desk a few days ago (I think they're collecting clothing through December).
Hope that helps!
Green Fort Greene + Clinton Hill News
/I, for one, want one of those "chic chopping bags." Spend a couple of fun and fruitful hours at our table at the Fort Greene Green Market on 11/17 or 11/24. You will meet many engaging and beautiful neighbors, help make our neighborhoods even more environmentally friendly, get some fresh air and dispel guilt. In the past two weeks we have sold 400 energy efficient light bulbs, given out hundreds of applications for non-polluting electricity, and added dozens of people to our list of New York's Greenest.
This week we will be offering very chic reusable shopping bags, as well.
If you can help, please email info@greenfgch.org.
Bulbs sprouting: Save energy and save money. Long life energy efficient light bulbs are offered at stores near you for a non-profit price. Each $2 or $2.50 bulb will save you over $100 because you will use less energy and replace bulbs far less frequently. Now at Yu, Green Farm, Fresh Garden, Greene Pharmacy. Coming soon to 4W, Restaurant New Orleans, Gnarly Vines, L'Epicerie, Green Apple Cafe and many others.
Ask your favorite store owner to join the movement. We supply a handsome decal for their window, leaflets explaining the whole bulb story (so they do not have to ) and the low priced bulbs. The store owner will sell the bulbs at cost for a few months as part of our community greening program. Let us know at info@greenfgch.org and we will follow up with them.

Gnarly Vines: Grand Opening Party!
/I admit, it's taken me awhile to get over to Gnarly Vines. But man, is it NICE in there! The space is enormous -- much bigger than I anticipated -- but is long and narrow, giving the store a cozy feel. Store owner Brian was ultra-friendly and recommended some great bottles for me.
Check out their Grand Opening party this Thursday from 6-10pm!
Also note: CSA members receive 10% off purchases!
Brooklyn Flea Coming to Lafayette!
/Our neighbor Brownstoner has just announced that he will run a weekly flea market in the school yard of Bishop Loughlin High School starting next spring! I'm hoping for a variety of good stuff, like wares from local artists and reasonably priced antiques... Official site is here!
Laundry on Myrtle
/Dragon Garden on Myrtle at Hall closed a short while back, making me wonder what new, trendy restaurant would open in its place. Turns out it'll be a laundromat. What do you think? Do the neighbors nearby need one? (And as an aside, could we pass a law that requires all laundromats have card machines so I can stop buying rolls of quarters? Just saying.)
